Description

Named after the Greek philosopher Aristotle from whom it takes its name, The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is the largest university in Greece, located in the ancient city of Thessaloniki, just 55km east of Aristotle’s birthplace, Stagira.

The university was founded in 1925 with a special emphasis on humanities. Its first department to be established was a Philosophy Faculty, which opened its doors in 1926 and was quickly followed by a mathematics and science faculty in 1927.

Over the years, the number of disciplines has grown, with the university now organised across twelve separate faculties, offering a large and diverse academic portfolio.

The university has a strong international reputation and boasts a longstanding association with the international exchange Erasmus Programme.

The institution is unique in offering courses in Modern Greek language and Greek culture to international students who wish to learn Greek as a language or study. Affiliated with the university is the Institute of Modern Greek Studies, which seeks to promote education through its publishing arm that produces books concerning Greek language, philology and literature.

Cultural activities offered to students at the university include an internationally-performing orchestra and abundance of clubs and societies. ‘Student Week’ s a cultural event organised annually on campus, which, despite its name, usually lasts for up to a month involves dance, music, theatre, cinema, sports and literature. The events is not limited to students and all citizens of Thessaloniki can attend.

The university’s main campus is in the centre of the city and covers an area of over 33 hectares, with some educational and administrative facilities located off campus and outside of Thessaloniki.

Its facilities include a university farm, a wildlife museum, a botanic garden, a centre for Byzantine Research, a seismological station and a meteorological station on Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece.

Great program overall, but the facilities and the accommodation are in very bad condition. Most of the professors are willing to help and take the learning process a step further. Also, the lab facilities are a little old-fashioned.

Just like most universities in Greece, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has some really bad facilities, especially lecture halls, classes and toilets. However, you might find some nice places if they're not always open for the public (e.g. libraries are actually nice). Professors are highly skilled and knowledgable people in their vast majority but not always interested in students or proper teaching. Therefore, classes sometimes are extremely disorganised and not of any value. The University is in the city centre, which makes it very accessible, and student life in the city is one of the best you can find. However, the campus is a pretty dangerous place in the afternoon and night hours so people need to be careful walking there at those times. Lastly, Aristotle University is considered one of the best universities in the country and holds some prestige, so career prospects are really promising after graduation.

AUTh is the largest university in Greece. Therefore, one can only be certain enough to speak for their faculty, which in my case is the faculty of engineering. Facility wise, it has its weaknesses but on the bright side it features multiple libraries, a server, computer and many other types of labs. The teaching as well as the rest of the staff is relatively good, skilled and willing enough to support the student body with their struggles in academia. My wider experience -which has been largely affected by Covid19- has been positively impacted by the extracurricular activities that one can take up while studying there, especially the ones initiated by students, such as cinema, photography and theater clubs, student organizations that promote personal development and teamwork like EESTEC, and various other kinds of workshops, conventions and special days. One also has to take in account that AUTh features a city campus, which makes it even more deeply connected with the lively vibe of Thessaloniki, where life has to offer something to everyone. Overall, I believe that in AUTh, as an engineering student at least, you get to make the most out of your academic experience, which is the least to say, interesting.

In my opinion, The Aristotle University of Thessaloníki is one of the best universities in Greece. AUTH is located in the city center in a beautiful environment with trees. In every field of study, most of the professors are real scientists with excellent knowledge, have passion for their job and are willing to help each student. Many of them are known for their work in an international level. My university offers a lot of opportunities to the students such as job opportunities. It offers them free academic books, free accommodation and free meals every day. I am so greatful i am a student in Aristotle University of Thessaloníki.

I'm currently in my second year of study in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Programme and have taken 3/4 of my semesters online. For my review, I will focus on my school's efficiency and ability to maintain the quality of the classes during the pandemic, especially during the past semester. First and foremost, almost no actions have been taken to allow the students to gain in-lab experience, and there is no sight of doing so, which is quite demotivating and discouraging for young engineers. Professors have been trying to keep up, however, no real alterations have been applied to neither the course's syllabus nor the examination methods to make them remote-learning friendly, causing a significant amount of students to either fail a class or pass it without having actually gained knowledge and experience. Additionally, there have been significant differences between the Student Body and the Administration, causing the latter to adopt questionable, even violent tactics towards the first in order to "restore order" in a very closed campus. The reason why I'm choosing to focus on the hardships we've had to face during the pandemic is that I believe it's important to have an indicator of an institution's ability to adjust to various conditions, as flexibility and concurrency become increasingly important for any type of organization that needs to stay up-to-date, especially a university. Finishing, I'd like to point out that this hasn't always been the case, as during the first live semester professors were highly motivating, and the university, in general, was thriving, despite the problems with the Administration, that has always been and always will be there. If you're thinking about attending an AUTh course, definitely wait until the measures have loosened enough to allow for universities to reopen.

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki needs improvements to its facilities , hiring more staff to support the academic manpower and to update its equipment at its science labs. Also it needs to get rid of bureaucracy because it makes delays in many cases. One of its best characheristics is the variety of active student teams that make bonds between different departments and make it more famous. Some of those teams are EESTEC, Aristurtle and IEEE.With their contribution our university gains prestige in international level.
