Description

Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) was established in July 1973, with its first students attending just the Department of Law and the Department of Civil Engineering in 1974.

It was named after the ancient pre-Socratic Greek philosopher Democritus who was born in the city of Avdira. He is primarily remembered today for his formulation of an atomic theory of matter.

Its nucleus based in Komotini, Greece and two faculties and 20 departments in four Thracian cities - nine in Komotini, five in Xanthi, four in Alexandroupoli and two in Orestiada.

There are eight schools: school of humanities, engineering school, law school, school of agricultural sciences, school of education sciences, school of economic and social sciences, school of health sciences and physical education and sport sciences all covering 18 departments.

The total number of students is approximately 30,000, including 18,000 undergraduates. The research and teaching staff body is around 600, plus approximately 300 administrative staff.

Democritus University of Thrace is based in Komotini, a city in the region of East Macedonia and Thrace, northeastern Greece and is home to a sizeable Turkish-speaking Muslim minority.

It is one of the main administrative, financial and cultural centres of northeastern Greece, as well as a major administrative, financial and cultural centre of northeastern Greece.

The Democritus University’s presence makes Komotini home to thousands of both Greek and international students, and this factor, combined with the eclectic mix of Western and Oriental aspects of the city’s quotidian life, make it an increasingly attractive tourist destination.

In my opinion, the buildings of the Electrical Engineers and the Civil Engineers are ideal. They are new, always clean and also guarded so that nobody can cause any damage. Moreover, the amphitheatres and classrooms are big enough to have all students who want to attend a lecture. The dormitories can be improved but, for me, it is a pretty convenient place for a student to stay. The canteen at those dormitories has very friendly staff working there and, in addition, the meals are of very good quality.

DUTH is located on Thrace but provides to Students with a great amount of Knowledge and great faculties located in different cities of Thrace. DUTH can easily compare with bigger Universities. The presence of Student Organizations is highly noticed.

I'm currently in my third semester. I don't live inside the campus but have visited a lot of friends who do, and the accommodation is barely viable (small rooms, extremely bad insulation, old buildings), Most professors either do not care about teaching, or do care but don't have the skills to transfer knowledge to the students. The amphitheaters and classrooms are okay (heating could be better and some are too small for everyone to fit). Online classes are generally okay, but the platform we currently use has technical limitations (Skype for Business). Textbooks are free (by the government), but generally arrive late and sometimes don't reflect what is said in class. My general notion is that, although most topics and classes are interesting and will help me become a computer engineer, most of the time it's not even worth attending class and the student has to do all the work on their own, without even the necessary sources.

Due to the outbreak, all the lessons were transferred into the online environment. The same happened with the exams. We had the chance to participate in our exams last summer without staying behind the schedule. This semester we tried hybrid lessons, respecting the number of people that should attend. Our professors are open to questions and responses. Room for improvement: better scheduling when it comes to labs. Last but not least there are a lot of student organizations giving to students a wide range of possibilities when it comes to getting involved and improving.

Most courses are on point, interesting and provide useful informations. It's a flaw that most of the facilities in Xanthi, were i study, are outside the city.

The university offers accessibility to a newly built campus for the polytechnic school, while the professors are very easy to reach. Because of the school being placed in a smaller town, most of the professors know the students that attend frequently. Other than that, the ECE department specifically offers many chances to become part of international organizations and gain travel experiences while attending conferences. There is an Erasmus office offering exchanges and internships abroad as well. The academic level of the ECE department is really good, and for those that have decided to heavily invest in their studies, there are many chances to enter top level jobs after graduating in companies such as ARM or work in environments like CERN.

It is a university with a renewed curriculum so that the student can get the general knowledge on the subject of electrical engineering but also in recent years to be able to specialize in courses and areas that interest him most. Laboratories have relatively old machines and I think they should be closer to today's technology. Finally, organizations have an important place in the university as we have one of the most active student branches of EESTEC where it offers many supplies to students that will help them in their careers.

The facilities are not the best since they are old and neglected, at least the campus site that my faculty is located on. The professors although they are easy to reach, it seems sometimes that most of them are distant from the students and are not willing to help with some of the problems that they face (regarding their studies). The university campus is in town so it is accesible. The student life on campus is very vibrant. There are no international students as far as i know.
