Description

A state institution better known as Athens Polytechnic, the National Technical University of Athens history is as entwined with Greece’s political history as its academic heritage.

Founded in 1837 as the Royal School of Arts, it took the polytechnic title in 1862 and in the early 1870s moved to the Patision complex in the centre of Athens. This site became renowned as a centre for the Greek resistance under Nazi occupation during the Second World War and, in 1973, for the uprising which signalled the overthrow the following year of the "Colonels" military dictatorship.

There is a monument to the 23 killed in the uprising on the campus, while the colourful graffiti of the surrounding district testifies to a continuing political ambience.

Alumni include Alexis Tsipras, Greece’s Prime Minister.

While the school of architecture continues to operate from the neo-classical buildings of the old campus, the other eight schools, seven of them varieties of engineering, are based on the 190-acre Zografou campus.

Students are recruited via Greece’s school-leaving examination, most scoring in the top five per cent. The university is believed to have produced around 40 per cent of Greece’s active engineers.

Ranked fifth in the Nature Index for Greece for 2018, it had six physicists listed in a survey of the 200 most cited scientists in the world. A number of current researchers lead a European Union project seeking pathways to a low carbon economy, and are heavily involved in the Fit4Reuse programme, led by the University of Bologna, aimed at finding unconventional water resources for agriculture in Mediterranean countries.

There are also a great few student organizations that provide added value to the students' life.

The knowledge that is offered is of a high level and there is a wide variety of options and different subjects. However, the way of knowledge transfer is totally outdated. The labs are inefficiently equipped and professors are not focused on providing a hands-on application on everything we learn. Although the theoretical background which is provided is high and a lot of attention is paid to the overall knowledge of some fields, the practical examples, exercises, simulations and experiments which help student deeply understand what they learn is of a low level. I would recommend my University to students because of its prestigious position in Greece but I would also suggest that a lot of things are to be improved and related to the needs of the modern era.

So, as it stated in the title, if I was to choose a university for my undergraduate studies again, this university-faculty would still be my 1st choice. I feel privileged to have studied here, since it is an internationally recognized university and a faculty with a lot of potential, both for students and for alumni. The level of the theoretical knowledge acquired is top; however there is room for improvement in terms of practical applications and linking with the business world. The professors are friendly and cooperative in their majority, and willing to help students who show true interest in their studies and a potential for further development and contribution to the university. The services offered to students need to be modernized a bit, however steps are being taken towards that direction. It is in general a strong degree, which is appreciated by companies and universities and offers a lot of career opportunities. Recommendations by the professors are highly appreciated and thanks to them a large number of students is able to continue their studies abroad, in top universities in Europe and/or America. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in building a strong academic background and use it to contribute in advancing technology.

National Technical University is one of the most famous and prestigious universities in Greece. One could say that it deserves its title. Most of the professors are dedicated to their classes and want to provide the best possible experiences to their students. They are trying to make their lectures interactive and they manage to provide different projects to make everything clear and maintain a strong connection between the students and the topics. At the same time, the level of the students is quite high which in general helps the professors to take their lectures to the next stage. Other than that, the university is quite open to providing opportunities to students to make research in our labs, even from the first years of our studies, we have the chance to work closely with very insightful professors. So, I can say with certainty that I am really satisfied with the academic part of my university. Some suggestions for improvement I could see are the following: - Some of the labs are missing needed equipment, or the equipment is quite old. - The campus in general is not very well preserved. - The connection with the market is not strong. - We don't have many opportunities for development apart from the academic part. (e.g Associations, Lectures, Workshops etc) Lastly, despite the lack of resources, our university currently is one of the few in Greece that has managed to move every lecture and exam online. There were no delays and our schedule and program was continued like nothing has changed.

I consider my university as a great place to gather theoretical knowledge but it has room for improvement in hands on experience. Our professors are really good at their field and most of them communicate easily their knowledge. In a theoretical basis our university is really challenging but doable because of the professors. Also there are many different fields you can study, from computer science and robotics to renewable sources of energy and bioengineering (in total there are 12 different fields through which you can choose). However when it comes to hands on experience through labs there are a lot of things to be improved. Labs are few and the equipment is outdated. However the overall experience is positive and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have a strong theoretical background through his career.

Although the university offers a high level of academic knowledge, both professors and students are few of the best in Greece, the University stills has to make a huge way in order to catch up with the great European Universities. The lab hours are very few, equipment is slightly outdated and the classes are usually overcrowded. Still, NTUA is considered the most prestigious school for engineering in Greece due to high level of knowledge provided.

It is probably the best Greek University and the only one which provides technical knowledge combined with theory in such a productive way. At the same time being able to approach Business and management from a technical perspective, is the appropriate tool to get you ahead in things.
