Description

Aston University is a public research university located in Birmingham’s city centre, England’s second largest city in terms of population.

Its origins date back to the 19th century when a School of Metallurgy was founded in the Birmingham and Midland Institute. By 1895 it had become the Birmingham Municipal Technical School. Several other name changes ensued until

Aston gained university status in 1966.

The university is made up of five schools: Engineering and Applied Science, Life and Health Sciences, Languages and Social Sciences, the Aston Medical School and the Aston Business School. It has a total student body of over 11,000 students, comprising around 9,000 undergraduates and more than 2,000 postgraduates.

Aston’s Business School was founded in 1947 and is one of the oldest and largest in the UK. It holds triple accreditation, which is a classification given to only 73 business schools worldwide by the three leading business school accreditation associations.

The university campus is spread across 60 acres of land in the Gosta Green area of Birmingham and comes complete with a swimming pool, sports centres, a library, cafés, restaurants, pubs, and shops, hairdressers, health centres and lots of green space.

Aston boasts strong links to industry and business and in 2012The Telegraphnewspaper ranked Aston among the top 10 UK universities for producing millionaires.

It also has partnerships in place with more than 140 universities in 40 different countries, including China, Hong Kong and India.

Among Aston’s alumni are stand-up comedian Frankie Boyle, BBC journalist Ivan Noble, and senior international correspondent at CNN, Nic Robertson.

Overall it's a great University with many societies and growing student community. There are many great societies for various students from all over the world. Many sports clubs, personally I was using the basketball court and was occasionally using the swimming pool. Furthermore, the university has a great amount of student and careers support which helps you get a placement or secure a graduate job.

Aston University has a numerous number of facilities that can help students get through their university life. One facility which I find has been helpful to me is the Peer Mentoring scheme. This is one to one scheme where the mentor can provide help to their mentee. The mentee has the opportunity to seek help from someone who has been in the same situation as them before. I give high praise to the lecturers, who put in a lot of work and teach at very high levels. If you ever have a query the lecturers are friendly and respond to their emails promptly. The campus itself is really lovely. It is a safe and secure university with 24/7 security. There is also plenty of space where one can read/ revise peacefully. The main building is always open and there are spaces designated for each discipline.

There are a multitude of societies to join and everyone is super friendly and kind. I wish there was more diversity in the lecturing staff, however.

Aston University is a school that is devoted to the progression of their students, from the way lectures are taught to the postgraduate opportunities. Aston University provides many support opportunities, including a careers website where you can access placements, internships, graduate internships and part time jobs. It also has numerous ways in which they support their students through online resources, ample reading resources in a library that is open almost all of the time, personal emails for all of the lecturers, and also mental health support which is incredibly important. The only fallbacks of this university would be that it is very Business orientated, as the majority of the students do study Business, so there are more resources for these students. Also, they alter how the modules are assessed often, which means that they are not very highly organised in the first year that the assessments are laid out this way. For example, this year for my Research Methods module in Psychology, they changed the main coursework piece to an exam, which left lecturers unsure of how to provide guidance on how to revise and caused much confusion with students.

Aston is nice small campus. Easy to get around from lecture rooms. It is placed well in birmingham very central to everything a student needs. The lecturers vary from course to course, but as a whole they seem very disorganised in comparison to other Unis and always very late with giving announcements and results. Pharmacy lecturers are the worst! They give late replies and aren’t helpful whatsoever! Aston is decent but could improve thoroughly. MB is so old and could do with renovation.
