Description

Founded in 1825, the University of Huddersfield – originally the Huddersfield Scientific and Mechanic Institute – has a longstanding tradition of providing vocational education.

Today, with student numbers at more than 24,000, the university continues to emphasise professional experience alongside academic study, with all students given the opportunity to undertake work placements and sandwich courses. Around 70% of Huddersfield students gain a professional qualification alongside their main degree and many courses also include a new language as an extra module.

Aided by strong industry links, Huddersfield also prides itself in being a leader in the field of enterprise. It supports self-starters and was awarded with the THE Entrepreneurial University of the Year award in 2012. Its new, state-of-the-art 3M Buckley Innovation Centre promotes innovation and collaboration between students, faculty and local business start-ups.

Overseas study opportunities are available to students within Europe and further afield via Huddersfield’s partnerships with Hong Kong Polytechnic University and SUNY (State University of New York), among others.

The university comprises seven academic schools and is located in Huddersfield town centre, alongside the picturesque Narrow Canal and tree-lined towpath, old bridges and converted mills.

It recently opened Student Central, a new £22.5m development that brings together learning and leisure facilities under one roof.

With a lower cost of living compared to other parts of the UK, Huddersfield is a popular student destination. Mid-way between Leeds and Manchester, it offers easy access to two major northern cities as well as the great outdoors. The Peak District National Park is also within easy reach, which offers activities such as hiking, rock climbing, caving, sailing, quad biking, horse riding and more.

Alumni of the university include the politician Lord David Blunkett, BBC Breakfast presenter Sally Nugent, the actor Rob James-Collier who played Thomas Barrow in Downton Abbey, and Adil Ray, who co-writes and stars in Citizen Khan.

Thanks to government funding the University of Huddersfield is constantly expanding and improving facilities available to students. The lecturers are friendly and can provide one-to-one support during their office hours for difficult aspects of the course. The university was awarded gold by the TEF which is an accurate reflection of the exceptional teaching provided at Huddersfield. All classes are recorded and can be accessed online in case of absence or for revision purposes. The university has a strict attendance policy to ensure students maintain at least 80% attendance, providing extra incentive to wake up on time! The campus is located within the town centre making it easily accessible by public transport and only a few minutes walk from bars and shops.

The Campus's helpful staff that are present to help you out in any walk of your life!there's on-campus employment hub, various societies and on top of all and there are teachers to talk to if you're going thru something. The library is great and the service is really efficient. The student union is a friendly hub offered by students to students which allows us to resolve a variety of issues with their help. The student central is a great building to grab a bite or a cup of coffee while rushing through the lectures. As with the course the content is always relevant with lecture handouts provided. The teachers in my foundation year were really helpful and were ready to provide help outside of the hours as well!

It's brilliant to see there has a student ambassador job when I brose the email sent by TARGETjobs and want to try it. For me, I am an International student, also a top-up student major in TESOL. For the top-up course is a one-year program, I am quite nervous before I came to the UK because I worried about how much I could learn from such a short timeframe. However, when the semester starts, I found that the course was excellent. First of all, the lecturers arrange the learning process step by step for us who just came to the University and help us enter a flow state, cultivate our thinking into critical. Secondly, there are lots of resources we could access. For example, the library, it was convenient to find and get books or ebooks which you want. Even If some questions emerge, either the lecturers or the librarian can give some useful advice for my study. Thirdly For accommodation, Huddersfield is a nice place to live because I can go to every necessary place on foot such as supermarket or railway station. The locations of those are friendly to students. Besides, there has a lovely park named greenhead park which I like most, and an ancient castle dotted on the mountain top which I can see it every day when I walk back to my dorm. I can say if you like natural scenery, then you will love life in Huddersfield. At last, I get a first-class degree in my study which achieved my initial goal. I would recommend the course to future students because the memory of this year is quiet cannot forget.

The University of Huddersfield is not necessarily a high-profile university in the UK, especially in comparison to many of the Russell Group institutions. However, as someone who has studied at a Russell Group university before transferring to Huddersfield, I can say that, for me, Huddersfield wins hands down in several ways. At times, with the Russell Group university, I felt it was difficult to make my voice heard or often my opinions were discounted. At Huddersfield, I feel the opposite is true. Support staff and lecturers are open, friendly, approachable and make time for you. Communication is clear and informative. The University won a THE award whilst I was studying there and since studying even more investment has gone into the buildings and structures around campus. New, innovative designs sit well within older buildings. There is a modern student union area, although no bar sadly for those who remember the old set up, but there are plenty within a stone's throw of the university. It's a TEF gold rated university and well deserved. Most of the teaching I received was excellent. Facilities are very good. The one thing lacking for me as a single student parent was an onsite nursery or crèche but as far as I am aware one of the student reps was looking into this.
