Description

Initially developed as a centre of Technology, Art and Design, the roots of Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) date back to 1824; it was founded as a University in 1992, with the modern institution comprising eight specialist faculties.

MMU receives the third highest number of student applications in the UK and is home to more than 36,000 students, making it one of the largest student populations in Europe.

Manchester itself is also a renowned hub for arts, culture and creativity, and is regularly ranked in the top spot as the best city to live in the UK by the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Liveability Survey.

MMU itself lays claim to a total of 8,000 students and staff who are involved in ‘cultural production’, making it one of the largest creative communities in Britain.

The university’s achievements are not just limited to creative disciplines though. MMU boasts the UK’s second largest Business School. In 2014 it was recognised as a top ‘new’ university for its health research in the Research Excellence Framework results, while the institution has long been at the forefront of developments in Early Years and Childhood Studies.

‘Promoting diversity’ is listed among the university core values, as is an emphasis on vocational education and employability.

MMU also prides itself on strong partnerships with businesses and organisations at a regional, national and international level, and which include the BBC and IBM. Many of its degree courses include a year-long work placement with these organisations – something the university believes aids its high employment rate for graduates.

Based on two campuses, MMU is located in Manchester city centre with another site in the town of Crewe, in Cheshire. The university has made significant capital investment in its infrastructure of late, giving rise to a new student’s union building, new laboratories, a £10million Exercise and Sport Science Centre, and a £6million contemporary arts centre on its Cheshire campus.

Among the university’s 250,000 alumni, are the actors and comedians Steve Coogan, Julie Walters and John Bishop, while poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy is the Creative Director of its Writing School.

Good facilities in a great location, sometimes it can be a little bit difficult to resolve issues which could be down to a lack of staff but overall would recommend to anyone who would be interested.

The academic facilities and quality of teaching were excellent, interesting lectures and good infrastructures, the location of the uni was perfect, close to both the train station and the centre. plus manchester is one of the biggest student cities, there are four other universities and you get to have all the amenities and freedom of choice in restaurants and activities, and with a very reasonable cost of living. In general MMU is a really open and free thinking place and there are so many opportunities available in all aspects of student life!

The business school is large, modern and always looking for new ways to improve. Majority of the tutors are helpful and provide you with any help you need for assignments. MMU also hosts events for students, giving us the opportunity to speak to potential employers which is useful. There are also many opportunities to do sports and meet new people. The uni has something called "active campus" where you can turn up and play different sports up to three times per week for free. One of the things that was surprising to me was that the first year was quite easy in terms of workload. It becomes more challenging in the second and especially third year which prepares you for work life quite well. Another negative, I would say for me, was that there is a lot of group assignments, which I personally do not prefer.

Overall its a good uni, i get good support from my teachers and peers. There are also many on campus cafes and places to study. I like my professors and feel hopeful for my career prospects. Waiting to see how they deal with covid-19 teaching.

What I've noticed from the very beginning is the effort that is being made in order to make an overall better student experience. From the very prompt and efficient student service systems to the constant facility and campus upgrades or student engagement, it seems like they are going the extra mile or doing something a lot of universities that take their students for granted have forgotten. As a CS student, facilities are on point. Always up to date and diverse hardware and software. Modules cover all the essentials and the overall quality of data that you get out of them is good. The level of difficulty is a downside. It seems like regardless of how good or bad of a student you are, you can pass without to much trouble. So, if you're a careless student you can go trough the whole thing and learn little to none. It's obviously a matter of student individuality, but it's something that can be addressed. Also, professors are okay but every once in a while you might get a bad apple in terms of the teaching quality.
