Description

Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) was founded in 1993, after the merging of Glasgow Polytechnic with The Queen's College.

Home to more than 20,000 students, it is now one of Scotland's largest universities and, with over £45million recently invested in state-of-the-art facilities, its main campus in Glasgow city centre is regarded as one of the most modern campuses in the UK.

The university is made up of three schools: the School of Engineering and Built Environment, Glasgow School for Business and Society, and School of Health and Life Sciences. GCU also has a presence in New York City and in Spitalfields in London, which offers postgraduate courses in fashion.

GCU prides itself on being a practical institution that offers a unique range of degree programmes. It is the only university to offer an Honours degree in Risk Management and its London-based school of fashion is the only one of its kind to offer an MBA in Luxury Brand Management.

The university's practical approach has led to the development of teaching facilities such as a virtual hospital, broadcasting suite and a fashion factory. It’s an approach that’s been commended by the Confederation of British Industry and Future Fit, among others, for successfully preparing its students for employment.

GCU is also a popular choice among students for its courses in nursing and midwifery, and the university boasts strong links with the NHS.

It has a strong reputation for implementing effective widening access policies. Its award-winning initiative, The Caledonian Club, works with young people in Glasgow and London to tackle below average progression rates into higher education.

The university's motto is 'For the common good' and it is one of only 29 universities and colleges in the world to be certified as a 'Changemaker Campus' by Ashoka U, for promoting higher education as a vehicle for social change. It is also the first Scottish university to be accredited by the Living Wage Foundation.

Commonly referred to as the 'culture capital' of Scotland, Glasgow was also cited by National Geographic in 2016 as being one of the top places in the world to visit.

I graduated from Adult Nursing, class of 2017. I had a great experience at Glasgow Caledonian. I found all course material relevant and useful to my practice. Modules covered: in depth physiology, essential for nursing practice, most common health conditions faced by healthcare workers, ethics and legislation which underpins nursing. In particular, I found Caledonian had great facilities for learning practical skills. They have a number of simulated labs which allows for learning basics such as using hospital beds, how to use nursing equipment, how to undertake observation of vital signs - blood pressure, pulse, temp etc., and more advanced simulations showed how to respond to the deteriorating patient, advanced life support including CPR and airway management. Glasgow Caledonian also undertake a multidisciplinary approach to learning. At least one module per year I with students from different health professions such as physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapist, radiographers, social workers, which helped me understand the importance/relevance of these other professions in relation to nursing and their role in delivering hight quality care. The uni also have a great online resource for nurses which allows you to research "how to" guides e.g. "how to insert indwelling catheter" "how to insert nasogastric tube" step by step guides, easy to follow and so very useful!! Would definitely recommend to a friend. I think Cale is a great uni to train ?

GCU is a very modern university. The campus is very central and it is beneficial that all the buildings are in the one area. The staff on my course have been very helpful throughout my time studying there. The other services available such as the careers service have been a great help to me, for example forming a CV. Also, the learning development centre have been useful when it comes to assignments - they are easy to contact via email or drop-ins.

I studied 4 years in this university and from what I realised, compared to other universities it could improve on their technology and tutor support. It is a rather small university but it is located in the heart of the city centre. It is brimming with foreign students and culture so it demonstrates it welcomes all kinds of nationalities. However, they struggle to enforce the nationalities together and become closer. Mandatory attendance is kind of lax, not many students attend lectures. The library resources personally, are lacking and outdated. They offer student accommodation nearby. What the university values the most is sustainability and diversity. They do not offer much support for work opportunities.

I truly believe this university knows the path that had to undertake to become a University and took it to teaching. This organization is a very reliable University that truly understands what is like to be a student, either from the same country or from elsewhere. The courses are good and can be very challenging if you want them to be, and the staff can be very friendly and can really push you as a student. Moreover, has been ranked 18th in the UK behind very prestigious institutions, making this "new" University a great place to study.

I really like every aspect of Glasgow Caledonian University because of the variety of interesting courses, great options for extra activities such as sport, chess, and game clubs. The library provides every student with easy access to all online books and resources, and the floors are divided by the level of noise during studying. It is a very multicultural and social environment, which makes everyone feel at home.
