Description

Leiden University has been elevating minds and making an impact since 1575. That’s 443 years of tradition and innovation. We are: • The first, and therefore oldest university in the Netherlands, established by William of Orange • Ranked in the world’s top 100 • Located in two vibrant student cities: Leiden and The Hague • A founding member of the League of European Research Universities • Highly international In its nearly 450 years of existence, our university has built a solid reputation. Notable Leiden alumni include members of the Dutch royal family, King Willem Alexander, Princess Beatrix van Oranje-Nassau and His Royal Highness Constantijn van Oranje-Nassau, as well as former Secretary General of NATO Professor Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and current Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. Even Winston Churchill was an honourary degree recipient of Leiden University! Throughout its history the university has stood for freedom and its motto, Praesidium Libertatis, translates as ‘bastion of freedom’, dating back to when its founder conferred university status on Leiden in recognition of the city’s resistance against Spanish invaders. The modern day Leiden stands for inclusiveness and diversity. It comprises seven faculties in the arts, sciences and social sciences, is home to 28,100 students from 120 different countries and describes itself as ‘a place of refuge where any question can be asked and answered in complete freedom'. The city grew up around the university over the centuries, and has made Leiden the vibrant student-city it is today. Leiden University has a second location in the International City of Peace and Justice: The Hague. Leiden University College, the university’s international bachelor’s honours college, the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs and a number of programmes from our other faculties are based in there. Research A total of 16 Nobel Prize winners are associated with Leiden as well as 21 Spinoza Prize winners, the highest accolades awarded in Dutch science. Albert Einstein was once a visiting professor at Leiden and, in terms of modern scientific research, the university works closely with the Leiden Bio Science Park, the most prestigious life sciences cluster in the Netherlands and one of the most successful science parks in Europe. The university credits its high international rankings in science to the freedom it continues to give to its scientists to pursue excellence. Leiden University aims to maintain its internationally recognised position as a leading research-intensive university within the European area. Leiden already holds a leading position in many fields, including natural sciences, life sciences (the so-called 'red biotechnology'), medicine, social sciences, international law, astronomy and non-Western languages. The University positions its programmes within an international context and guarantees that the quality of the programmes meets internationally accepted standards. Our graduates are therefore fully equipped to take part in both master's programmes and PhD programmes in the Netherlands and further afield. Leiden has chosen to focus its research within 11 profile areas, most of which have a multidisciplinary focus: • Asian modernities and traditions • Bioscience: the science base of health • Brain function and dysfunction over the lifespan • Fundamentals of science • Global interaction of people, culture and power through the ages • Health, prevention and the human life cycle • Interaction between legal systems • Language diversity in the world • Political legitimacy: institutions and identities • Translational drug discovery and development • Vascular and regenerative medicine Teaching Leiden prides itself on a teaching style that emphasises individual learning and small group work. Its modest-sized classrooms are designed to allow faculty to offer personal supervision and ensure that students’ needs are met. Leiden University will contribute to your academic and your personal development. Besides attending lectures, you will be doing your own research into topics that are relevant to society today, supported by lecturers and professors of international standing. Our international university is also the ideal place for networking with people from all over the world. Your opinion matters. Whatever your views, whatever your faith, for us freedom of opinion is key. Programmes The University offers a broad range of programmes: 12 English-taught and 40 Dutch-taught bachelor's programmes; 78 English-taught master's programmes (with 200 over specialisations); highly diverse PhD tracks; and various interdisciplinary minors. In addition, within the Honours Academy Leiden University offers an Honours College, the Leiden Leadership Programme and the Leiden University College The Hague for excellent students.

Leiden University is very competitive, especially when taking courses such as psychology or law. The first year at Leiden University is very tough. The teaching methods are not always very comprehensive or holistic, however, by the end of the first-year students are exposed to most (if not all) possible courses they can attend. After the first year, the university showcases all their amazing resources and exposes students to a wide array of courses that they can choose from. Leiden University has state of the art facilities and professors as from second year onwards, however, when it comes to first-year, students would benefit greatly from more transparency and guidance on how the university works as well as more elaborate materials to help students succeed.

Academic faculty were very approachable and seemed more than happy to help students. In my experience participation in classroom discussions, independent research and creativity in papers were very important.

I live in Amsterdam and travel quite a bit to go to Leiden University, which is mainly because the first time I was at the university before enrolling, I felt like this is where I belong. The international environment, but also the overall vibe is really refreshing and peaceful. It is organized administratively and there are too many good things about the university that make you overlook the pitfalls. It is very diverse and like I said the international environment that I am in makes me feel at home.

As a student in the underhraduate programme ‘Liberal Arts and Sciences: Global Challenges’, I can confirm that the programme is indeed challenging and international as promised on their website. Each student in the programme automatically receives housing from the university (high standard and low price), and the student life services are excellent (counsellors, RA’s, etc.) additionally, the courses are diverse and all the majors are extremely interesting. Many of the professors have extremelt interesting and practical professional careers, meaning that students get quality education preparing you for the working world. This programme is in The Hague, a super nice city that lends itself well to students of the Global Challenges programme.

It is a good university, I would definitely recommend it even though there is some room for improvement. Housing arrangements are pretty expensive and in my opinion the specialization courses should have more available spots.

The university is overly bureaucratic, except for when it suits the university itself. Professors have no interest in teaching and the quality of the education is subpar. Grades always come back late… but woe to the student who is a minute late....

The university is overly bureaucratic, except for when it suits the university itself. Professors have no interest in teaching and the quality of the education is subpar. Grades always come back late… but woe to the student who is a minute late. There is no sense of empathy among the faculty or any sense of parttime students having work or family commitments. The university only caters to those fresh out of secondary school. If you want a solid education, and a faculty that encourages independent thought and independent students- stay away! Go elsewhere!

Competitive university with great facilities and variety of programs. Very responsive in their contact with students and student-friendly in their administrative parts. -No opportunities for internationals in terms of internships and thesis projects. Very little educational and psychometric material in English. No intergration of internationals with Dutch students (seperate classes workgroups). Dutch students have the option to give certain exams in Dutch although the whole program is in English (unfair proviledge).

Great university, welcoming to international students. Intl. Bachelor Psychology program covers broad range of topics / courses, allows for many individual elective courses. University is huge but city is very student friendly.
