Description

Imperial College London, a science-based institution based in the centre of the capital, is regarded as one of the UK’s leading institutions. The college has around 15,000 students and 8,000 staff, with a focus on four main areas: science, engineering, medicine and business. The institution has its roots in the vision of Prince Albert to make London’s South Kensington a centre for education, with colleges going alongside the nearby Natural History Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and Science Museum. Imperial was granted its charter in 1907, merging the Royal College of Science, the Royal School of Mines and the City & Guilds College. The institution boasts 14 Nobel Prize winners, including Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin. Famous alumni include science fiction author H.G. Wells, Queen guitarist Brian May, former prime minister of India Rajiv Gandhi, former UK chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson, and former chief executive of Singapore Airlines Chew Choon Seng. The college’s motto is Scientia imperii decus et tutamen, which translates as “Scientific knowledge, the crowning glory and the safeguard of the empire”. Imperial’s most notable landmark is the Queen's Tower, a remainder of the Imperial Institute, built to mark Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887.  https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/imperial-college-london

The teachers at Imperial college are very passionate about their work, and it has a real impact on how they teach it. Best teaching ever. I totally recommend it. It will be hard but it's totally with it.

I would say the course is well-delivered with clear goals and advice for further readings. The lecturers are all approachable and very knowledgable in their own field by doing cutting-edge researches. Other than lectures, we also have tutorials, problem classes and laboratory sessions during the term. The tutorials and problem classes are usually quite challenging and it is fine if you don't know the answers. With over 50% of international students in my course, I am exposed to a wide range of culture and can make friends all over the world! There are also 300 clubs and societies for students to join alongside with our studies. Located in South Kensington, Imperial College is next to the Natural History Museum and the V

Overall the university and the staff are of a high quality and have offered my support through my years here. My academic experience is significantly related to the chosen course which was a new one at time I joined. This has caused many problems regarding the administrative and organisational aspect of the course, despite very interesting and engaging contents. Apart from the academic side, I enjoyed my time at the university a lot, joining societies and making friends.

Imperial is a high intensity learning environment where students are expected to take initiative for their own learning. Because of this, there is a large emphasis on independent reading beyond the syllabus in addition to maintaining a firm grasp on the core lecture material. This makes Imperial a challenging but rewarding environment when success ensues. Students will feel that they have a comprehensive awareness of any topic in their area of specialism and can talk about many subjects with authority. This makes Imperial a world-class institution and prepares the students exceptionally well for life after university.

Overall an excellent experience! During my time at Imperial, I was able to learn cutting edge science from world-leading experts, all while meeting amazing people from all walks of life. At times the workload was intense, but I felt that with the support of my friends and academic staff, this could be suitably managed. Imperial also has a reputation for being boring with no social life; however, I was able to join a range of different clubs and societies and enjoy the nightlife of London all while balancing my studies. The experience you get from Imperial is very much what you make it and the opportunities you want to get out of the university and London!
