Description

The University of York founding principles of equality and opportunity for all are anchored by the highest academic standards. A member of the prestigious Russell Group of research-led UK universities, York is one of the youngest universities to rank within the THE World University Rankings’ top 150. We’re proud to be home to around 20,000 students from over 150 countries and each student that joins our supportive community brings a new voice to the richness of perspectives at York.

Our 28 academic departments undertake groundbreaking research that underpins our inspiring teaching and challenges students to dream big and think critically. We work in partnership with institutions across the world to develop discoveries and technologies that tackle some of most pressing global challenges. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) we rank 10th for research impact.

The University builds these research accolades and global connections into the teaching and opportunities that we provide for students. We offer York Futures, a distinctive personal development and activities programme created in partnership with top employers, to help prepare students for employment and further study. York also connects students to the local community through internships and major events like York Festival of Ideas, one of the largest free festivals of its kind in the UK aiming to inspire diverse audiences about the joy and impact of ideas and education.

The university’s parkland campus champions biodiversity and is home to a rich variety of wildlife within its lake, wetlands, tree trail and bird sanctuary. Located in the south-east of York, it’s a short distance from the historic city centre. York is an easily accessible city that’s pedestrian and cycle-friendly, with an extensive network of cycle lanes and off-road cycle paths. The city has a vibrant social scene offering shops, cafes, clubs, bars and restaurants.

I really enjoy my course, and all of my lectures and seminar tutors are really helpful and knowledgeable. The campus is really nice, and I love all the wildlife on campus. The uni needs to put more funding towards mental health as that is something which is lacking. The uni is also keen to promote sustainability, yet continues to invest in fossil fuels so in my view divestment is key to York maintaining its view as a sustainable university. Accommodation is also quite expensive - even the cheap options aren't particularly cheap.

This is a fantastic university. It has a fantastic reputation and lives up to this reputation. The city itself is overwhelmingly incredible. With the minister and city walls among many other things it is absolutely beautiful. It is close to Leeds and Newcastle, despite being a smaller city it is surrounded by many other amazing cities with great connections to both the north and the south. The university itself is wonderful. The collegiate system is a wonderful way to meet people. There is an incredible sense of rivalry as well as a very warm and homely feeling. It is not only where you love but the sports you play, the friends you make and the family you have. I study Politics which ranks one of the highest across the country. I cannot criticise this subject at all. It is very interesting where in first year I studied compulsory modules which ranged from economic, to American politics and political philosophy. It was a fantastic basis which I chose my second year subject upon. The choices were diverse and intensely interesting. After just finishing my second year I can not recommend Politics at York enough. It is above and beyond what I expected it to be. The lecturers are all so caring and always have time for feedback or questions. York is a fantastic city and university which has been fantastic for me and I’m sure will be fantastic for anyone who is lucky enough to find themselves there.

Pros:- Well-reputed University (Russel-group University) The curriculum is great. Active discussion forums A chance to get in touch with people from all over the world pursuing the same thing Module tutors are very responsive and helpful. They acknowledged my concerns and assured that the module will be improved for the upcoming students. Cons:- Topics are not explained in detail, instead, book references are provided to know more. I believe is also not too bad, as this is a Masters level course.

Great atmosphere in the campus with lots of facilities for both academical and social purposes. The Uni is in a nice location with two campuses that are easy to get to. Good teaching staff and a fun place to study!

York is fab, campus vibe is super chill. Not a huge city but extremely safe and friendly. Nightlife could be better but the people make it great. Loads of bars and pubs - if you come make the most of them. Finding my course interesting.

It has a beautiful campus and the town is very lovely too. The university is split into two campuses and the commute between them is a 15-minute walk. The east campus has a homely feeling to it and is very close to the campus gym. The west campus hosts most of the student events and also right next to the university library. Would definetely recommend for both undergrad and postgrad degree.

I am a Bulgarian student currently in the second year at the University of York. I came to York through clearing after I changed my mind last second and decided against going to the University of Sheffield. As of today, despite some drawbacks, I wouldn´t say I regret this decision. First of all, let`s talk about the campus. It´s great! It is a campus-based uni, which means it is not located right in the centre of York, which is sometimes a bit annoying, but that gives it its own unique student vibe. The facilities are great, there are two massive lakes, many geese and ducks and despite some buildings looking like they were taken from a socialist dystopia on the outside, everything just comes together very nicely and the campus is unprecedentedly beautiful. It really has a very unique atmosphere and I would say it makes you more inclined to study. The accommodation is also quite good, apart from its high cost, which is typical of York though. The fact that there are different colleges which have their own life makes it very interesting, as there are different events and competitions happening around campus at all times. When it comes to the people I´ve met here, they have all been quite nice and everyone has been very welcoming, which is something very important when you come from a different culture. The nightlife of York, given that it is not such a big city, is quite alright, but even if you don´t like going out and drinking there are plenty of other stuff that´s going on, like the sports competitions between colleges that I mentioned earlier, which I enjoy both watching and taking part in. There are also societies and other stuff as well, of course. And last but not least, the quality of education. I would say some of my lecturers could have been better and the fact that there are almost no assignments throughout the year and everything depends on your end-of-year exams is a bit annoying, but still, I would say if you do pay attention in lectures and actually try and study throughout the term and not just before the exams, you will be fine. The material that we learn is a bit hard, but it is interesting and important for the most part. To conclude, York is a nice and prestigious university and there is a reason why. If anyone is thinking about coming here, I do recommend it.

Lovely staff, supportive academics, unlimited resources, and a wonderful town! I have had the pleasure to undertake my MSc in York, and it has definitely been one of my best decisions ever. I got very involved in campus activities and volunteering opportunities, which gave me a lot of confidence. I can confidently say I am now an independent, critical, and skilful researcher. Although we had a pandemic during the middle of the programme, the Biology department always offered support, advice and help towards anything we needed and it has felt really nice to be part of the York family. Thank you!
