Description

Established in 1218, Salamanca University in northwest Spain is one of the oldest institutions in Europe and the country's first higher education institute.

The prestigious university, which teaches about 30,000 students, has been dubbed the ”Oxford of Spain“ and is an important centre for the study of the humanities. Salamanca University also has campuses in Ávila, Béjar and Zamora.

Salamanca University is made up of the colleges of law, liberal arts, and science and medicine, as well as other academic units, and there are more than 250 academic programmes on offer.

The institution began teaching Spanish language and cultural courses in 1929 and attracts more than 4,000 foreign language learners each year. The year-round Spanish language programme is taught in the Escuelas Menores building where graduating students once wrote their signatures on its walls in an ink made of bull’s blood, olive oil and herbs. The university's motto roughly translates as "what nature doesn't give, Salamanca doesn't provide".

University alumni include Don Quixote author Miguel de Cervantes, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, and the film director Alexander Payne, who directed About Schmidt and Sideways.

Salamanca, which has a population of about 170,000 people, is about two hours' drive from Madrid. It is known as ”La Dorada“, or the Golden City, because of the ”glow“ given off by its sandstone buildings. Its Old City, home to Plaza Mayor, two cathedrals and the House of Shells, has Unesco World Heritage Centre status. In 2002, the city was named European Capital of Culture.

It is a very complete university. Some teachers could be improved as they don't update the information with the current situation of the economy and don't give real examples of the working life but in general, it is good

My experience as a student at the University of Salamanca has to say that it has been satisfactory. In certain aspects I have benefited more from being a member of this university community than from the degree itself. In my case, I studied Occupational Therapy, a poorly developed career at this university that aspires to improve every year. Still, the many conferences, talks, presentations, language courses … etc that the university offers are very useful.

It is a university with a wide range of different studies and with many students. The university brings that city to life. It has great recognition and is one of the oldest in the world. In addition, it offers many services to its students, there are many teams for sports and many associations in which you can participate and develop outside the classroom. I think that every university faculty is different. In Pharmacy faculty, teachers do not strive to teach classes and many subject classes are not very useful, but the library is good and the cafe is better!

I've been studying here for almost 5 years and the organization, teachers and equipment is good but has a lot of room for improvement taking into account how much money you pay to study there. However, the city is definitely the best in Spain.

I want to believe that my bad experience was because my degree was new at that time, and we were the first promotion. But it was not truly organized, teachers did not seem to care for the students, they had not any background to make classes interesting and useful. Of course, there were some exceptions, but in general, my opinion is not really good. I hope they will improve these issues since the competent bodies did not care about the students' opinion nor the biannual surveys we did.

As a student, I have had the opportunity to witness the overall performance of the university. From the Law's Bachelor perspective, although every department has very talented researchers and lecturers, I would recommend to strengthen the internship programs and facilitating entry to the labour market for students. Anyway, the University of Salamanca offers a very enriching experience within an international, diverse environment. 8/10

I would recommend to everyone to study at least one year of their life in Salamanca, because it is a magical city. The University of Salamanca, at least, when I studied there, has good facilities and a fairly large research faculty. It is a University that has quite advanced electronic resources compared to other Universities. It is a very young but old university. As for the degree in Labor Relations, it has its economic, psychological and legal part, and obviously Salamanca has the best for teaching these subjects. It also has Labor Inspectors, Social Security Managers … etc.
