Description

Ulster University (UU) is a multi-campus university in Northern Ireland that was founded in 1984.

Comprising six faculties, the university is home to approximately 26,000 students, 2,000 of whom are international from over 80 different countries.

In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), UU was ranked within the top five universities in the UK for its research in law, biomedical sciences, nursing, and art and design.

The university also boasts strong links with business and industry and courses are structured to allow students to combines their studies with vocational work placements.

Its main Belfast campus constitutes one of Northern Ireland's largest urban developments. Situated in Cathedral Quarter, the artistic and cultural area of the city, the campus is currently undergoing a £250 million redevelopment programme to upgrade its teaching and learning facilities.

Although traditionally associated with Art, the Belfast campus has expanded to include subjects such as architecture, event management, Irish language, photography and digital animation. It also plays host to frequent fashion shows, art exhibitions and other cultural events across its 75,000sqm estate.

The course provision at UU’s Coleraine campus is broad, encompassing biomedical sciences, business, the humanities, computing, film and journalism, among others.

The campus sits on the banks of the river Bann, less than a mile from the centre of Coleraine - the largest and busiest town on the Causeway Coast - offering easy access to the nearby beaches of Portrush and Portstewart, as well as the Giant's Causeway World Heritage Site. On campus, the Riverside Theatre - the third largest professional theatre in Northern Ireland - is a main attraction.

UU is a leading university for sport in Ireland and the UK, with its Jordanstown campus, located seven miles north of Belfast city centre, providing a home to the Sports Institute of Northern Ireland where leading athletes train.

The Magee campus is another main sports centre comprising a fitness suite and floodlit pitches. The nearby River Foyle and town of Donegal offer a range of outdoor activities including sailing, rowing, canoeing, hill walking and climbing.

I studied in the Coleraine campus and it was perfect. The facilities in this campus are outstanding, all the rooms are new and totally equipped so that makes e it easier to learn there. Also the professors are very friendly and are always available to help you, even more if you are a foreigner, so that’s perfect for all the people who are used to study in english and maybe is more difficult to get everything in every lesson. The university structure based on modules is also nice, because it makes it easier to organize yourself and to decide which ones to choose and the times. The quality of them for me was pretty good, so I could learn a lot during my time there. The university also has a lot of sports possibilities which you can choose during the year with a low fare. The gym is also new and a lot of students normally go there. Other facts that make your experience there pretty nice is an agreement between the university and one association called “international friends”. The members of this association are local families who want to show you the local culture, so they take you to different places to visit, having lunchs with them or preparing different activities such a local dancing performances there. For me Ulster University is a very nice university to study abroad so you can learn a lot and grow personal and professionally.

I liked that all of the facilities were located on one campus - all within walking distance from each other however, transport to and from the campus was sparse. In the end I had to buy a car to commute to the campus.

Really good student life with close community. Some professors are absolutely amazing and others I’m a bit concerned as to how they got into the profession. Kelly’s Wednesdays should never be missed!

So far i have really enjoyed my time at Ulster. My course is interesting and has optional modules in 2nd and final year making it easier to experience many different areas in computing. There is also a required placement year which is part of the reason i picked the course. Most lecturers are really nice and helpful. I've also had some really great lab technicians that really will sit with you and explain things. The location of campus isn't great but there are buses and trains every 30 mins to and from city center. The campus is starting to look outdated but they are moving to the Belfast campus within the next few years. The university doesn't have as big a reputation as others but offers a well rounded education and high employment rates and most importantly i enjoy going there and will be very proud to graduate from Ulster next year.
