Description

The Technical University of Denmark dates its history back to 1829, when it was founded by H.C. Ørsted, the father of electromagnetism, and its graduates played a major role in the rise of Danish engineering. It is now bills itself as one of the leading engineering universities in Europe, and teaches the subject at bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels.

Research at the university focuses on the physical sciences – including chemistry, biotechnology and physics – as well as on certain industries such as agriculture, management, transport and construction. The university says it is particularly focused on “usefulness to society, relevance to business, and sustainability”.

When it comes to studying, the “Scandinavian way” pervades how students are taught, the university says. Students are encouraged take responsibility for their projects, and there is also a “refreshing lack of hierarchy” and relatively informal relationships between academics and students. Professors are known by their first names, as in Denmark, respect is earned, rather than coming from wealth, job or car size. But don’t be late – even a delay of a few minutes is considered “quite rude”, according to the institution.

The university’s main campus is at Lyngby, around 15 km north of Copenhagen. It was constructed in the 1960s and 1970s when it needed more space, and now boasts more than 100 buildings. The campus was designed by a famous Danish architect couple, Eva and Nils Koppel. There are also other university outposts in Ballerup, northwest of Copenhagen, and at Risø, which sits on one of Denmark’s fjords and specialises in finding sustainable energy solutions.

DTU is a great university to study in. It has some very smart lecturers and they are very helpful. Subjects they offer at this university is very interesting and have a lot of different subjects to choose from. I enjoyed the studying methodology they use here, which are used with practical industrial problems. Apart from this DTU also offers a very good student life. There are many clubs and different activities throughout the year to keep students united and entertained.

I was studying at the University of Cyprus for 3 years and while I was following my journey as an entrepreneur, I moved to Denmark to develop one of my projects. Since I decided to move to Copenhagen, I thought It would be a good idea to move my degree at DTU since it's considered quite prestigious for a university. During my studies so far, I found the climate to be quite friendly and professors have friendly relationships with students and are really encouraging - not to mention they introduced me to many people who could help me further with my project and research. Also, there are so many startup competitions with money awards (and not only) which is motivating and also connects you to many like-minded people. However, I found the campus to be really far and rent really expensive. A very nice part is DTU Skylab, which has co-working spaces, free equipment (even 3d printing!).

The procedure for applying for the university is very simple, and dedicated personnel is always there to answer any questions that you may have. Before even coming to Denmark you will have to register for the courses that you will attend on your first semester, which may be a little hard, but you will have the chance to change them if you realize you wanted something different. The only problem before coming to Copenhagen is finding accommodation, which is a difficult procedure as there are not many housing options available, and you will need to communicate with the accommodation office frequently if you are to find accommodation through DTU. The Campus is very beautiful, with new buildings and a lot of green areas, and they are renovating it frequently. The library has plenty of room to study including rooms for group studying. There are also computers with dual screens that students can use, as well as printers where you can print for free in black and white. The cantines offer a variety of dishes in a buffet, although the price is considered high. On Friday there are several student bars that open on campus where a lot of students gather to drink and have fun. There are also events that take place once or twice per month. Regarding the actual courses, you are given a significant degree of freedom when choosing the courses that you would like to attend. With the exception of some mandatory courses for general competences and technological specialization, you are free to choose from an extended list of courses. You can also choose to have special courses which you define yourself together with a professor so that you can tailor your studies to your specific interests. The university offers a variety of theoretical and experimental courses. The majority of professors are very kind and helpful and always ask for the students' opinions on how they can improve the course in the future. Finally, the university hosts a variety of events regarding your future career, where you can get in touch with companies in your field of studies. There is also a dedicated career center on campus, where you can get feedback on your CV and Cover Letter.
