University of Zagreb

Each faculty has a big autonomy and because of that there are big differences between them. I am sharing my experience about Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. Organization is quite good. Every relevant information can be found on faculty website where every subject has it's own page. Most of the teachers are professional and easy going. It's ok to contact them for every problem or question. Classes are ok, although there are too much unnecessary information in some of them. Only problem I have with university is its administration. It is influenced by politics too much! Also, there's big lack of transparency when spending money from government grants. This is not affecting students directly but it's lowering the quality of institution.

although we don't have a campus with all the faculties in one place, it is not that hard to go from one to another faculty. Sadly, I would say that most of the faculties are a bit closed minded and quite restrictive (preparing students for a limited Croatian market so it's hard to do specializations because they need to be ready for anything), but some faculties are really great - e.g. Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. It's definitely a good place for people who want to learn something because for a cheap price you can learn a lot

The University of Zagreb is scattered all over the city of Zagreb. It consists of various faculties which aren't connected very well; thus, I can give opinion only about Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER). FER is considered most solemn and well-organized faculty at the University of Zagreb. The first year is most difficult for students because they aren't used to the pace of studying. At each course, you can collect 100 points through exams, homework, projects or laboratory exercises. You have to collect at least 50 points to get the passing grade; also, some courses have special conditions for getting the passing grade. For example, one course has allocated 20 points for laboratory exercises; that is 20% of total grade. If you don't collect at least 10 points through laboratory exercises, you have to take that course next year and pay 140 HRK * the number of ECTS points. That can be very frustrating because otherwise you could easily study during summer and pass the course during Autumn exam period. Lectures are useless because it takes less time to study through YouTube videos (for example MIT open courses), officially published materials or written materials made by students. ____On the other side, I really like the freedom that you have. Attending lectures isn't mandatory; that gives you the opportunity to manage your own time. Professors can be attentive if you ask them to; if you want to learn everything yourself, no one will bother you.

The university isn't anymore at its best. There are a lot of political questions, problems with deens and rector which decreaces quality of university. However, there are faculties that are considered as best in this part of Europe as it is on Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. It is well known for great organisation and high quality professors and students. It is important to mention that here, professors want to help and will spend great amount of time on students. Also, you will have no problems finding a job after this faculty. Regarding the accommodation, it is ok. There is accommodation missing, however, it is really cheap and there is cantine nearby. Also accomodation is well connected to all faculties. I would recommend joining some of the student associations that offer great opportunities to students. Food isn't of great quality but it is really cheap. Regarding student life, I believe that is really good part of university in Zagreb. All faculties are connected to town center with trams .

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Zagreb is a well organised faculty with a great tradition and has produced many successful engineers who are now the top of industry in Croatia. This is definitely the best such faculty among all universities in Croatia which is shown by the success of its present students in many competitions as well as its past students.__The faculty's programs are well structured and the subjects consist of many ways of checking student's knowledge. There is a lot of laboratory work which helps students better understand the application of acquired knowledge. The content of the subjects is divided into two smaller exams during the semester which makes passing those subjects much more comfortable for students.__The professors are very professional and take the task of educating young people very seriously.__All in all I believe this faculty is one of the best at the University of Zagreb, which has also proved to be the best university in Croatia.

Although the first year you get most information, the further you go the less information you get from your professors and it is easy to see they don't care anymore they just do the classes and then you need to leave them alone. There are a few members of the faculty that will help when asked and those are the ones you wish to meet.

I studied at the Faculty of Economics and Business, so I can only talk about my experience there. The program is good and some teachers are very nice, but some seem to be a bit confused and unorganized. They do not require students to continuously study during the semester but mostly just during the exam period. However, some classes, such as marketing ones were a bit more challenging (and more fun in my opinion) and required pre-readings, group projects and so on. One of the drawbacks were people working in the student offices, which are very rude and do not seem to do their job. Most faculties have their own student restaurants where you can buy cheap food if you are an EU student, which is awesome. Gets a bit crowded sometimes, but the food is okay. Overall, I would rate this university 3/5.

Although you usually make your student life great no matter what, there are many things that could be better on this Uni. Food quality in cantine is not the best, you don't really have a lot of public places to study at, there are professors that teach old, outdated technology/knowledge and the wages after/during your study here (if you're working) are not high enough. But, on the other side, if you try hard enough and know what you're doing, you can get a lot from the University of Zagreb! You just have to fight for it.
