Description

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) was founded in 1881 as Newark Technical School. It was renamed NJIT in 1975.

It is a public research polytechnic university that focuses its students on careers relating to modern technology. It is also a land and sea grant institution, and a member of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.

NJIT has a total student enrolment of over 11,000 and offers 125 degree programmes across six schools: the Newark College of Engineering, the College of Architecture and Design, the College of Computing Sciences, the College of Science and Liberal Arts, the School of Management, and the Albert Dorman Honours College.

The campus is located on a 45 acre campus in the University Heights district of downtown Newark, New Jersey’s largest city and a major travel hub. With three other higher education institutions located in Newark, it’s also a college city with some 30,000 students resident at any one time.

New York City is a 20 minute ride away by train and the beaches of Jersey Shore can be reached in under an hour.

The university is recognised as being a centre for technological research and innovation, with current research projects underway into everything from cyber security and smart materials to neural prosthetics and wearable robots.

In the past decade, NJIT has doubled the size of its campus, investing in its infrastructure and including developments such as relaxation lounges, an open-air roof garden, a games room and a bowling alley.

It is also home to the Van Houten Library and the Barbara and Leonard Littman Library for Architecture. While New Jersey’s largest high technology and life science business incubator, owned by the university, is located in its Enterprise Development Centre. Comprising 90 member companies, it employs around 400 people and generates millions of dollars in third-party funding and revenues.

This is neither a bad nor a great university. Too many rules, regulations and facilities could be improved. Education depends on the subjects you choose and the professors (I believe the spectrum of their teaching is too wide as compared to other schools). Greater New York region helps the cause as many students do secure great jobs.

I had two of my masters degree here at NJIT. I could say this is the place where I transformed from a student to an entrepreneur. The professors and faculties I met here are professional, dedicated and considerate. Some of them became my mentor and friends. This is what I like about NJIT. If you are looking for a great university to transform yourself for a better future, NJIT could be your top choice.
