Description

Aalto University is a multidisciplinary university whose main campus is located in Otaniemi in Espoo, Finland. The institution has six schools with around 20,000 students in total and 4,500 staff, 400 of whom are professors.

Courses are offered across schools of arts, design and architecture; chemical technology; business; electrical engineering; engineering; and science.

Around 30 per cent of staff are from abroad.

The university, which offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes in all its fields of study, describes itself as committed to "identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future”.

Aalto University was founded in 2010 from the merger of Helsinki University of Technology, the Helsinki School of Economics and the University of Art and Design Helsinki. Beyond its main campus, other campuses are located in Töölö and Arabia in Helsinki.

The aim of the institution's foundaiton was to create a new innovative university combining science and technology, business and economics, design and art.

The name of the institution is a tribute to the life and work of Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The core of the Otaniemi site is a park campus, designed by him.

The campus and its surrounds are the location for the headquarters of Finland’s largest companies’ headquarters, as well as smaller enterprises. Otaniemi is also home to over two thousand students.

The institution is a foundation-based university. The capital of the foundation was formed by donations from the government alongside those from Finnish industries and other financiers.

I am currently doing my bachelor's degree in Aalto University, Mathematics and System Sciences as my major. I find amazing how much different fields of studies have found each other in the campus area at Otaniemi. Also with it's strong student union. There is plenty of associations that you can find yourself besides studies, whether you like to train your sauna skills or compete in beer pong, you name it! I myself am internationally minded and found myself on the Board of European Students of Technology (BEST). Even tho the university is diverse and the opportunities you have are endless, I want to see more openness to international involvement and have local students spend more time with the exchange ones. 4/5 comes from the idea that, even tho the university is great in the educational and social areas, there is always space for improvement.

I chose to do my masters at Aalto over a top 10 University in the US, and I did not regret it one bit. The quality of education, facilities and research opportunities at Aalto are on par with the best universities, especially in the field of computer science and machine learning. The innovation and entrepreneural vibe at Aalto is unmissable, especially in the startup space (Aaltoes, startup life, AVP, junction, slush, etc.. ) .

Aalto is great at providing real-world skills and training! Courses emphasize understanding and ability to apply what you learned, instead of memorizing facts. Many courses are realized in cooperation with business and industry, giving students valuable contacts and experience for post-graduation employment. Modern teaching methods encourage engagement, and course evaluation is spread out, meaning less stress on the exam week and more opportynity to tale part in the social parts of studying and the vibrant Finnish student culture. I very much enjoy studying at Aalto!

Studying at Aalto University has been the best experience of my living in Finland so far. At Aalto, you will have a chance to meet and work with bright, talented and hard-working students who are also open-minded and fun to hang out with. You will always learn something new from your studies, from your teachers and your friends. Aalto University also has the best support for its student, from their well-being to their academic performance. You will always get an answer to any of your questions as the teachers and staff are very kind and are always available to help. The university also has tons of activities ranging from career fairs to sport clubs adventures. You will always find something you want to do here! It is the best school I have ever attended

I've been studying mechanical engineering at Aalto University for over three years now. I like the amount of different available courses and the freedom in studies. The teaching is of great quality and the staff is helpful. Guidance in studies is great, the students are taken care of. I have a personal mentor professor with whom I can discuss my study plans. I feel that I can learn a lot of relevant subjects and I can get help for choosing what I want to learn. There are a lot of interesting activities outside studies as well. Today I'm attending a free lecture about stock investing that's not related to any course I'm on. There is an abundance of student restaurants on the campus with cheap and good quality meals, most for 2,60e including bread, milk and salad. I also have a cheap room with my own fridge and toilet 3 min walk away from the university, provided by the university housing office for 315 euros per month. The rent includes internet connection with 100 MB speed (or 1000? at least some rooms have 1000), electricity and water. There is also a cheap gym with great sports rooms, the card costing 132e per year for students of Aalto (usual good quality gyms are easily 50e per month in Finland). This price includes free group exercise sessions - I tried Astanga yoga once, great! The area is also good for jogging and there is a 400m running track/football field right under my window. Overall, I rate my university experience in Aalto so far 5/5. I can't think of anything missing.
