The university has been operating under this name since 2018, following the merger of two Romanian state universities: the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Targu Mureș and Petru Maior University of Targu Mureș.
Throughout its 60-year history, the university has gained a reputation as one of the most prestigious state institutions of higher education in Romania. It is the only healthcare university that offers teaching in Romanian, Hungarian and English.
The university offers courses in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, engineering, science, economics and law among others. Students are able to study at bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The university aims to provide students with teaching from highly trained staff, enriching research, promotion of critical thinking, and preparation for employment.
Students from about 50 countries come to study at the university.
The university places a large focus on research, and created the master in scientific research programme, offering graduates a chance to conduct research and develop their skills to be able to carry out their own extensive research projects.
Students also have access to an abundance of on-campus activities from sports competitions to concerts.
The city of Targu Mures is a lively, historically-rich city. The city is on the banks of the second-longest river in Romania, the Mures River, which acts as a great recreational source for residents.
Targu Mures has a rich musical and sports culture, from the Palace of Culture which holds weekly classical concerts, to the Trans-sil Stadium, home to the local football teams.
