Description

Established in 1863 and located in the heart of Milan, Politecnico di Milano (Polimi) provides high quality education at undergraduate, graduate and higher education levels in Engineering, Architecture and Design. With over 45,000 students, it is the largest technical university in Italy.

Politecnico di Milano offers a wide range of graduate programs taught in English and has more than 7000 international students coming from more than 100 different countries.

Over the past century and a half, Polimi has had a strong focus on science, technology, and innovation. By placing these core values at the centre of its research and academic offer, Polimi is now considered among the most outstanding universities of Europe and enjoys an excellent reputation among employers. Cutting edge technologies and state of the art laboratories are the driving force behind the tremendous success of this institution. And now, more than ever, this relentless push for development is of the utmost importance.

Many ongoing projects have made Politecnico di Milano an extremely valuable resource to the city of Milan and indeed to the whole of Italy. Research within the context of the ongoing global pandemic has placed Polimi as a key contributor in the design of medical equipment, data analysis and the production of disinfectant used by local health and civil agencies. Milan has been recognized as one of the world's four fashion capitals, thanks to several international events and fairs, including Milan Fashion Week and the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, which are currently among the world's biggest in terms of revenue, visitors, and growth. The future of the city is also very bright with important changes and events awaiting its citizens. The city will host the 2026 Winter Olympics, meaning big investments on infrastructures and services and a general push to put Milan on the global stage. In general, Milan offers a very lively and engaging cultural environment and it is a perfect starting point to visit Italy, a fascinating country, full of historical landmarks, arts and beauty.

The Polimi has had many notable alumni over its long history, including Giulio Natta, the 1963 Nobel prize winner for chemistry, and Renzo Piano, winner of the 1998 Pritzker Architecture Prize and architect of many iconic buildings such as the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Shard in London. Further architectural improvements to the campus are ongoing with a project based on an idea of Renzo Piano, with the addition of over 8000 square metres of green areas, 4200 square metres of laboratories, classrooms, and study rooms.

It is an excellent university that gives a varied and in-depth preparation. He also manages to prepare professional figures sought after on the market. Most of the teachers are very open to questions and questions, but they often involve little students. The practical part of laboratories should be increased. They would also need investments to improve classrooms and common places, such as more study rooms. As for my course of study, then biomedical engineering, I recommend it for the great variety of topics covered and the possibilities of choice that offers you. Furthermore, it has less engineering subjects concerning physiology and biology that make the course of study more interesting.

The University offers great job and growth opportunities. During the last years, many efforts have been made for the quality of extracurricular activities and the students life. It will take a few years more to enlarge the structures and to develop better strategies to improve the teaching quality (especially for the first two years) and to manage the growing number of people enrolled.

First thing that I noticed when I arrived at Politecnico was the sheer amount of work you need to do to get good grades. Second thing that I noticed was that it was really easy to get absorbed by it. Needless to say that that's not the right approach in attending university, but, more or less, all universities are similar under this side, so where does Politecnico shines? Opportunities given to students are endless. You get job fairs, student associations, meetings with professors and experts, occasions to meet different cultures and exchange ideas. So, you got the point. You should exploit all opportunities Politecnico will offer you, and then you'll get its best.

My experience at Politecnico for the last four years has been excellent. The majority of the professors are competent and the stimulate the interest in their field. Most of the courses have given a lot of personal satisfaction. In the last year they have renovated the common spaces in the School of Architecture building and the atmosphere has improved. Although there are a lot of positive qualities, there are a few flaws: bureaucracy in my experience lacks of clarity and sometimes equality; often there isn't a good management of the spaces (classrooms, common spaces..)

If you are looking for a university where you can relax don't choose Polimi. It is not an easy university, during the year you will be challenged by professors, exams and projects. However, Politecnico prepares you for a future working life. I mean, it doesn't give you all the knowledge necessary, but it gives u a method, and it teaches u to adopt a rigorous mood in whatever u have to do. It is tough, but it pays off.

I study mechanical engineering. I felt always supported by polimi during this pandemic, the courses had been quickly adapted to distance mode in an efficient and practical way. Furthermore there are a lot of extracurricular activities, lots of event to take part in. Also I found the Career Service office really useful to have and idea of "what comes after" and try to be ready for it!

Unfortunatly my year at this university wasn't as good as I expected. The distribution of buildings and classrooms is chaotic and impossible to understand and to find. Teachers are always unpunctual to teach and to attend exams, but for Italian students everything is normal, (I still can't undestand) Anyway life on this campus is great because there are many activities, places to eat, a huge green area, it is well connected by means of transportation

If I went back I would make this choice again. The effort required is not little but a very rewarding achievement of the objectives. Polimi offers high trained professors, state-of-the-art facilities, updated teaching and a good preparation for future career. In addition, it gives the possibility to exploit European and extra territory thanks to international collaborations with universities and big firms around the world in order to improve personal skills and to put theory into practice.

Very good university with a strong academic curriculum and a good reputation across Europe. After graduation there are good career opportunities. As an international student the experience is great, the cultural diversity is interesting. I would just appreciate more practical experiences and extra-curricular activities.
