Description

Originating in 1870 from the Leicester School of Art, De Montfort University (DMU) was granted university status in 1992 and took its name from Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, who established the first parliament in 1265.

The modern-day DMU has around 20,000 students, drawn from around the world and divided across its four faculties of Art, Design and Humanities, Business and Law, Health and life Sciences, and Technology.

The university places a strong emphasises on career-relevant skills. Many of its courses are endorsed by professional bodies and teaching is aligned with current industry practices. Its extensive links with business mean many students undertake a work placement with a variety of organisations that include the BBC, the NHS, HP and Deloitte.

According to the 2015 Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey, DMU is among the top 25 UK universities with the best employment rates, with almost 96% of its graduates in work or further study six months after graduating (well above the national average).

DMU’s campus is only a five minute walk to the city centre, which is home to a range of shops, cafes and a thriving nightlife, while the university’s QEII leisure centre has a vast number of facilities open to students including a climbing wall, a 25 metre swimming pool and a dance studio.

For extra-curricular activities, students have over 140 clubs and societies to choose and the university also hosts guest lectures on campus with those who are leaders in their field: shoe designer Jimmy Choo and the novelist (and alumnus) Adele Parks among them.

DMU has recently invested £136million in redeveloping its city centre site, to improve teaching rooms, eating areas and the Students’ Union, as well as to enhance the green space that surrounds the campus.

Other developments are underway, including the restoration of the Great Hall of Leicester Castle, which is to be transformed into a business school and offer a portfolio of new courses.

I didn’t expect such a welcoming and diverse university before arriving but it exceeded my expectations! Upon arrival I was instantly made comfortable with the staff - which was encouraging for me. Not just in a social aspect but this motivated me in my studies also. I can only speak highly of my experience at this uni as the facilities were subpar and to a high quality, the teaching has been impeccable and my experience is one I am glad for.

You'll most likely only enjoy DMU if you try to make the most of it. Doing a Business and Management course was pretty easy and enjoyable, nothing too difficult. If you want to be challenged this isn't the subject for you. There really isn't too much to it, the facilities are good and most professors are really helpful and will try to make lectures and seminars enjoyable. The real value comes from the support you can get around your subject. For example the employability team. Going for a placement is something that can be extremely stressful and they make it manageable. If you where to compare my first CVs and Cover Letters to those and the end of the academic year you would be shocked. My ability and confidence in interviews rose dramatically thanks to them making sure I was prepared. This is just one example of many things that are in place at DMU. The reason I say "make the most of it" is because you will have to ask for them. You will be made aware of all this support, but you have to go ask for it. So would I recommend you to go DMU, yes. If you are willing to put in a little bit of work and go look for support then, it can make your time there worthwhile.

My opinion on this university is that I believe that university is a place where you need to take initiative and take advantage of the resources around you as well as learn as much as you can’t from the people around and and DMU really gives you...

I feel as though this university is very good with the supplies and facilities it has, although they lack lecturers within the dance department. The area for students is grand and the accommodation is relatively nice. 8/10

The campus has all the facilities you would ever need and is very close to the town centre, making it convenient to go shops in between breaks etc. Also, there’s a lot of accommodation spaces around and they’re all very welcoming.

I would recommend De Montfort University, I very much like how close the campus is to the city centre, accommodation and large super markets, it makes it easier to plan your day and visit University and. The campus itself is also well grouped together on the same site so you don't need to get a bus or walk too far from one building to the next.
