It is an interdisciplinary natural science study program in which the focus is on structures of the nanometer size scale (1 nm = 1 billionth of a meter). Research in nanoscience deals with the production, characterization and manipulation of individual atoms and molecules as well as the properties of structures and processes on this scale. There are special, new properties based on surface, quantum and self-organization effects, which are becoming increasingly important in everyday life in the area of information technology, energy, health and communication. The great, seminal feature of nanoscience lies in the interdisciplinary interaction of many, actually specialized fields of science.
