Nanosciences make up one of the largest research areas at the University of Hamburg and are also among the most important research centers in international comparison. Nanosciences are concerned with the fabrication, investigation and application of functional structures and dimensions below about 100 nanometers (one nanometer equals one millionth of a millimeter). In this size range, the properties of nanomaterials lead to innovative applications, eg in the areas of health, mobility and energy. The interdisciplinary Bachelor's degree course is jointly organized by the Departments of Chemistry, Computer Science and Physics.
