East Carolina's BA in history educates students for the global economy of the 21st century by providing them with an awareness of their own society as well as that of the world beyond North Carolina. Traditionally accepted as the ideal preparation for careers in law, government, and teaching, history today is more valuable than ever due to the skills of writing and critical thinking with which our graduates are equipped. The Department of History also has particular strengths in maritime, Atlantic world, and public history. Many history majors are double-majors, who are preparing for careers in teaching with the added benefit of a strengthened credential. The writing and critical thinking skills taught in history classes prepare all students, whether future teachers, lawyers, doctors, or anything else, to hold more rewarding jobs, be better citizens, and lead fuller lives.
