The Department of Portuguese Language and Literature of Spain, formerly known as the Department of Spanish Studies of the Department of Western Languages and Literature of Peking University, was founded in 1960 and is one of the three universities in China that currently have a Ph.D. in Spanish Language and Literature. Portuguese major was established in 2007. There are 12 Chinese teachers in the Western Portuguese Department, including 1 professor, 4 associate professors, 6 lecturers, 1 assistant professor, and 4 foreign teachers employed year-on-year. Western Portuguese Department also regularly hire well-known scholars and experts at home and abroad to my department short-term lectures. In 2008, the Spanish major was listed as a specialty by the Ministry of Education and Beijing respectively. The Spanish Department of Portuguese Language and Literature has been in this scientific system for 4 years, and aims to train high-level foreign language talents with profound international vision and broad cross-cultural ability, relying on the humanistic atmosphere of Peking University, featuring the research and translation of Spanish and Portuguese literature.
