Description
International relations is a program of study sponsored by the School of History and International Relations with the assistance of other academic units at Flinders. The field of international relations encompasses the causes and consequences of a world divided among different countries. Its elements include diplomacy, foreign policy analysis, strategic studies and military affairs, peace-keeping and war-making, ethical issues such as human rights and refugee asylum, aspects of international political economy and trade, and trans-national issues such as nuclear weapons, terrorism and environmental cooperation. International relations seeks to understand the role of 'middle powers' (like Australia) in a world that also includes a 'super power' (the United States) and 'small powers' (many poorer states). Students taking International Relations explore Australia's role in the world community and in the Asia-Pacific region. They can also study international organisations and regimes like the United Nations, NATO, ASEAN, the ANZUS alliance and the Kyoto Accord.
