The goal of the course Historical Musicology is the ability to perceive music as an aesthetic object and to understand and analyze it in its historical condition from late antiquity to the present as well as in connection with other arts. This includes the comprehensive knowledge of musical works as well as the familiarity with the writings on the theory and aesthetics of music, as well as the awareness of the changing functions of music in a social context. The students learn different music-historical methods, eg source criticism, style criticism, analysis or hermeneutics.
