The objective of the master's programme Metallurgy is to convey specialised knowledge in the field of metallurgy, exceeding the basic requirements. Especially the theoretical-practical knowledge is amplified and extended. In order to complete their studies, all students have to write and submit an independent, scientific master's thesis.
In the master’s programme, students can choose two elective course blocks out of the following options. This allows each student to specialize in his or her preferred fields to ensure a vast professional development.
Ferrous Metallurgy: In this course block, the basic principles of steel technology are presented in more detail. Special issues of metallurgical process technology are dealt with, as well as the specific manufacturing approaches of high-tech steel products in competition with other materials.
Non-Ferrous Metallurgy: The extraction of non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, copper, zinc, precious metals etc. is becoming increasingly important in today’s society. The overall metallurgical consideration of primary metallurgy and the recycling of scrap and residues represent a particular point of focus here. The sustainability is a very big issue in the industry and accompanies all fields in metallurgy.
Casting Technology: This option provides expertise in casting technology, i.e. the immediate production of metal components and intermediates from the melt, from solidification to various casting processes.
Forming Technology/Component Manufacture: The basic principles are taught, enabling the simulation of sheet and slab working processes during the course, including consideration of the microstructure in the course of metal forming and the production of new and improved products.
Simulation: In this elective course, the basic concepts of the simulation of metallurgical processes are considered and a deeper knowledge is conveyed. The students work with different, current simulation processes of metallurgy and acquire an understanding of simulation software.
Industrial Management: This option is designed to provide methodological competence in industrial management techniques and general management skills, as well as interpersonal skills on a management level.
