The Earth's surface is dominated by ocean, which is home to a vast array of life, from the smallest plankton to charismatic mammals such as whales and dolphins. Life originated in the ocean and life has evolved and interacted with the Earth, its ocean and climate over the last 3.5 billion years.
Humans have been increasingly influenced by the ocean. Its waters and the sea floor are rich in physical and biological resources. It provides employment for millions of people, acts as a transport route for much of the world's commerce, and accepts vast quantities of waste. Perhaps most of all, it inspires our spirit of adventure and imagination.
Here at Bangor University, Marine Biology has been taught for nearly 100 years. We are unique in encompassing the study of all aspects of the global marine environment, from estuaries and coasts to the deep ocean. Ocean Science involves the application of specialist scientific disciplines (biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics) to observe and to understand the diverse and often complex processes governing the Earth-Ocean-Atmosphere system. We bring together expertise in Marine Biology with genetics, numerical modelling and remote sensing.
Our unique location between the mountains and the sea, and our facilities, which include a fully equipped sea-going research vessel, as well as over 50 years of experience in world leading research and teaching across the full breath of the ocean sciences, make us one of the most popular universities in the UK for the study of the Marine Biology.
