UvA researchers present the AlgoSo cA I Opinion Monitor

Curious about the AI use of, for example, 35-44 year olds? Or confidence in AI for a cancer diagnosis? With the UvA's AlgoSoc AI Opinion Monitor you can see how different groups in the Netherlands think about AI and to what extent they use it. 70% of Dutch people do not (yet) use generative AI such as ChatGPT, but the differences between age categories appear to be very large.

The Algosec AI Opinion Monitor is the first result of the Algosec research project. Researchers Ernesto de León, Fabio Votta, Theo Araujo and Claes de Vreese asked almost 4,000 respondents in the Netherlands everything about developments within AI, and will continue to do so over the next three years.

'The AI Opinion Monitor helps society to gain more insight into a topic that is the subject of much discussion,' says postdoc researcher de León. 'Discussions about AI can be complex. For example, people often quickly talk about the dangers of AI, for example about how AI will cause many people to lose their jobs. The media attention for popular chatbots such as ChatGPT and other AI developments is overwhelming. This can create the impression that everyone in the Netherlands is well acquainted with AI and already uses it proactively on a daily basis. In our monitor you can see in a clear manner what the actual situation is in the Netherlands.'

Large 'age gap'
The results are striking. 70% of respondents indicate that they have never used generative AI, such as ChatGPT. The differences between age categories are very large. For example, 74% of young people between the ages of 16 and 24 say they have used generative AI in the past year. For people aged 25 and over, it appears that 74% have never tried to generate text or photo with AI. 'Today's young people grew up with the internet. They have more confidence to experiment with new technologies in their daily routines. We see this clearly in our monitor," says De Vreese, one of AlgoSoc's research leaders.

Recognizing AI content
Although not all Dutch people seem to use AI tools, they think others do. Only 15% of respondents say they have never come into contact with AI-generated texts, photos or videos on social media. Nearly half (49.5%) indicate that they regularly encounter AI-generated content on the internet. This is special, because most respondents do not consider themselves capable of recognizing AI-generated content. On a scale of 1 to 7, the average of the respondents is 2.58. According to respondents, journalists are best able to detect AI content.

Ongoing monitoring
'We will continue to closely monitor public attitudes towards AI over the next three years. If AI is applied more broadly in the future, for example in healthcare or other sectors, we can also map the resulting concerns in the monitor. And just like now, also specified by age, gender, education and political preference," de Léon indicates.

AlgoSoc will interview the same respondents every six months to measure the change in their use and attitudes towards AI and automated decision systems.

About AlgoSoc
In the project 'The algorithmic society' (ALGOSOC), scientists from within and outside the UvA are investigating how we can safeguard public values and human rights within the development of (semi-) automated processes, including AI. AlgoSoc is implemented by a national consortium. The participants in this are, in addition to the UvA: Utrecht University, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Tilburg University and Delft University of Technology.
