Guangdong University of Technology is located in China’s third largest city Guangdong. It was formerly known to the English-speaking world as Canton. The university traces its roots back to the Guangdong Institute of Technology, which was founded in 1952, and it took its current name when it merged with the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and the Eastern Campus of the South China Institute of Architecture in 1995.
It is classified as a Key Provincial University and describes itself as a "multidisciplinary university engaging with the international community".
It has 19 schools and faculties, with an emphasis on engineering. The schools of mechanical, materials, chemical and information engineering form part of the national 211 Project. It has more than 70 key laboratories and in 2017 filed 2,166 patent applications, the eighth most from a Chinese university.
The majority of the students are based at the Guangzhou HE Mega Campus in Waihuan Road which opened in 2005. Architecture and urban planning, art and design, law and continuing education operate from the former main campus on Dongfeng Road, management and economics are based at Longdong and the Business School at Ponyu.
A student robotics team won the 2018 National Championship, beating 1,450 rivals from 267 colleges and universities, while a research team collaborating with three Australian universities has devised nanosprings capable of breaking down microplastics in water.
Alongside the engineering school, the school of art and design aspires to be among the best in China and via its Research Institute of Rural Arts and Construction has devised programmes aimed at revitalising village life and communities through the arts.
