Description

Vilnius University in Lithuania, founded in 1579, prides itself on being the oldest higher education institution in the country and among the oldest in the whole of Eastern Europe.

Originally established as a Jesuit College, it became a university under King Stephen Bathory’s charter, with Pope Gregory XIII approving the change. The Jesuit order was disbanded in 1773 and, following the Russian annexation of Lithuania, the university was renamed the Vilnius Principal School. Between 1919 and 1939, a period of Polish control followed and, at different times during the war years, the country came under both Soviet and Nazi rule, making progress difficult. Following the war, the university gradually began to expand and, by 1990, Lithuania returned to being an autonomous country.

Today, Vilnius University is home to over 1,300 academic members of staff and more than 20,000 students, including around 1,200 international students. It is organised across 14 faculties, most of which are based centrally in the city and close to halls of residence. Most degree programmes are taught in Lithuanian, with some subjects also taught in English and Russian.

A significant part of the university is still based on the site of its old campus in the Old Town of Vilnius, a particularly scenic part of the city. Most of its summer school courses are taught in the Old Campus to allow students to get a feel for the history behind the university.

In keeping with other historic universities, Vilnius has many traditions that its current cohort continues to honour. Each year on the first day of September, for example, a lively student procession takes place that stretches from Parliament Palace to the university’s main building. While its extra-curricular opportunities include a folklore ensemble called Ratilio and a theatre group, Minimum, that has existed for more than 440 years.

One of the best universities to study sociology in Lithuania. The professors are very helpful to understand theory and they're always trying to interest the student. University has a big access to online resources. Great opportunity to get what you're looking for. The faculty of Philosophy is in the center with beautiful architecture and vibe. The dorm is about 5 km from the faculty, but with public transport is easy to reach. The dorm itself can be better.

Vilnius University is the best in Lithuania and it is really worthy of this title. Of course, people experience different experiences and have different opinions, but I, while studying at the Faculty of Philosophy, met with many inspiring instructors, I got a lot of my own and not only my specialty knowledge. I would definitely recommend to everyone.

My experience at Vilnius University has been just amazing. It gave me a lot of opportunities, I could study abroad (one year in Spain), now I can easily find a job in Lithuania. Moreover, it helped me to improve my personal skills, I believe, that now I am more communicative than before, more open-minded. In general, I would definitely recommend this university for everyone who wants to learn something new, who are motivated to be a better specialist or just wants to broaden their horizons.

I think Vilnius University is one of the best places to study in Lithuania. Sadly, I do not exactly think that the Faculty of Communication is a good place for that. As I am studying Creative Communication I do not think that I will graduate VU with a big luggage of skills or knowledge. I believe that for a lot of people this study programme can be enjoyable, as there is no need to study a lot, but for me, it is just an attractive name from which you are not getting much. A bit of everything and at the same time nothing. I do have this opinion that if you want to become a Communication specialist then it is better to study something from where you could get more fundamental knowledge (for example, something from the Faculty of Philosophy) and then you would adapt it to your Communication specialist career, so, all in all, I would not recommend this study programme.

As I am studying in the Faculty of Communication I for sure do not think that it is worth to spend 4 years in this place. Study programmes here are not that well prepared and, sadly, I could not say that the lecturers are very qualified. Anyway, I believe that other faculties are way better as a few times I had some lectures in for example, the Faculty of Philosophy, and I can guarantee that those lectures were way more interesting and valuable than the ones that I had in my study program.
