Description

Situated in the urban heart of the Slovenian capital, and established in 1919, the University of Ljubljana (UL) is the oldest and largest higher education institute in the country.

When it began, the university was made up of five faculties. These were law, philosophy, medicine, theology and technology. Today, the research university boasts a total of 23 faculties as well as three art academies covering theatre, radio, film and television, as well as fine arts, design and music. The university has also operated an art gallery since 2012.

Around 43,000 students attend UL, including 2,000 or so international students, with approximately 5,500 teachers, researchers, assistants and administrative support staff. Programmes relating to social sciences and natural sciences, as well as technical study programmes, remain among the university’s most renowned.

As the country’s largest university, UL is home to the National University Library, which holds almost 1.5 million books as well as text, visual and multimedia resources. Its Central Technological Library also holds national status and is an information centre for science and technology.

The International Association for Political Science Students – a non-profit, student-run umbrella group, made up of around 10,000 undergraduate and graduate political science students from around the world – is also based at UL.

Maintaining close ties with Slovenian and international companies is among UL’s current priorities as it seeks to develop its market-oriented activities on an annual basis. Its annual budget stands at around €324.5 million.

Also high on the university’s agenda is a major capital investment programme. UL recently acquired €88 million of EU funding for the construction of new buildings and the redevelopment of facilities. As well as being the largest single project in UL’s history, the redevelopment constitutes the first research and education infrastructural project in Slovenia to obtain such a large amount of granted funds.

Very open university, which offers a lot of activities. Student dorms are great and there is always something going on. The electrical engineering department is well equipped and you can easily get a project to work on in one of many laboratories.

Location in the capital city of Slovenia. Good student life. Everything is really close. The professors at my Faculty (of Electrical Engineering) are really nice (they aren't looking to screw you over!). At the same time, there is not enough work during the semester. You basically can sleep until the exam period, which is in my opinion really bad for the students. They (we) don't learn as much as if we would have various preliminary exams during the semester and a bit more homework also. But all in all, it's a good faculty.

It's a very nice program. I like it a lot. You get a lot of experience by working on real machines. Our professors are very nice and helpful when you ask them questions. They help us with old exercises and by listening to us.

The university in itself is nice, they are quite accomodating and will try to offer their students the best they can. With a wide range of faculties, programmes and even outside courses, they try to cover the fields they find most important. However they do not focus on the engineering and tech students but value social sciences most, which shows in the number of students admitted each year to the respective fields' faculties. Still, the Faculty of Computer and Information Science is one of the best there is, and the other engineering faculties are also very good at what they do.

The university is divided in many faculties, with each their own personality. Overall the best things about studying in Ljubljana are its location, it is quite small for a capital, your best choice to explore it is a bike (you can rent one for 3eur/year). There are lots of international students, rents for student dorms are low compared to other European cities.

I like that all the knowledge that was acquired so far during my studies was very wholesome and in depth. However, some of the professors are still teaching by their old styles and refuse to update their content according to the times.

I would recommend it, as it is a really nice school. The only problem is, they don't adapt to changes as quickly as they should, but that's general throughout all universities in Europe I guess… They do invest a lot in equipment, which is nice
