Description

The University of the West of Scotland (Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh na h-Alba an Iar), formerly the University of Paisley, is a public university with four campuses in south-western Scotland, in the towns of Paisley, Blantyre, Dumfries and Ayr, as well as a campus in London, England. The present institution dates from August 2007, following the merger of the University of Paisley with Bell College, Hamilton. It can trace its roots to the late 19th century, and has undergone numerous name changes and mergers over the last century, reflecting its gradual expansion throughout the west of Scotland region.

Holding a regional reputation for vocational undergraduate and post-graduate courses the university currently has 17,025 students, with approximately 1300 staff, spread across six schools of learning. The Crichton Campus in Dumfries is maintained in partnership with a number of other institutions, including the University of Glasgow.

I have started studying at UWS this September as an EU international student. So far I have only experienced great attitude from professors and all staff. From the very beginning we are shown tons of opportunities for volunteering, programmes such as MarkStrat and various tips on how to develop our own brand, business or network. The university itself is modern and welcoming. Many international students have found their way here with available guidance and help if needed. I would definitely recommend this university.

UWS is a great university where both students and faculty alike are a joy to be around. Having attended a Glasgow based University in the past but having to leave my studies due to personal circumstances I was hesitant about my return to university education. However, unlike my past experience at university, at UWS the faculty are a lot more friendlier and down to earth and have a lot more time for students compared to most other universities. They also help you vocationally, by setting you on a personalised professional development plan and encouraging to actively pursue employability options and keeping track of our developing skills unlike other universities who just hand you your degree and show you the door. Ultimately I would highly recommend UWS as there is no other University out there who truly does not treat you as a statistic and fully prepares you for whatever lays ahead be it postgraduate education or fully professional work.

I recently graduated earlier this year from UWS and I enjoyed every moment of studying within this university. UWS itself has a great ethos and encourages every individual to be apart of the whole community and to get involved in any extra activities/societies. The teaching at UWS is brilliant, all lecturers are so supportive and understanding therefore it makes your learning experience more enjoyable. There is loads of different courses to choose from, from my experience I studied Human Resource Management and within UWS it allows you to also gain your CIPD accreditation which is a huge benefit of studying at UWS. I thoroughly enjoyed my 4 years at UWS and will also recommend my course.

UWS is a great university although the organisation of certain modules are very poor. I am a 4th year student and when picking my final year modules I hope that everything would go smoothly, however the business school allowed a module to be selected by students which turned out to be a module only for marketing students. This took the business school nearly 4 weeks to find out and all affected student who had picked that module had to reselect a module meaning some were already full or wouldn’t fit within the timetable. This has been a similar pattern over the years hence this review. Most staff all really pleasant and helpful and some staff are completely out their depth when trying to organise a module and coursework.

My opinion about the university in london campus is like that : the teachers and the employees in the campus very friendly and nice people I like them, the students are the same also but there are no local students in the campus, all the students international and that's disappointed as some students as me would love to meet local students and learn from their culture, another thing I dont like in the university when we have classes in the fourth floor and we cant use the left, also I dont like the online library as I like the regular one and we dont have big one in the london campus, that was my opinion some people would agree or disagree with me but im honest and i said what I feel & think about it. thank you.
