Description

The University of Strathclyde was founded in 1796, making it one of the oldest higher education institutions in Glasgow, Scotland. Initially founded under the name The Andersonian Institute, it holds the distinction of being the first technological university, receiving this distinction in 1964.

The University of Strathclyde is situated on the John Anderson campus, named after the university’s founder. A large self-contained campus close to the city centre, it offers numerous student union and sports related facilities including football and rugby pitches, as well as indoor badminton courts and gym facilities. Academic facilities include a new Technology and Innovation centre opened in July 2015, as well as specialised pharmaceutical facilities.

The university offers a range of subjects, but has a focus on technological and scientific studies. Research is also an important part of Strathclyde’s offerings, with key focuses on health, manufacturing and energy, among others. Also on offer are a wide variety of partnerships with businesses as well as other higher education institutions, both inside and outside of the UK.

Being that it is such a long-running and well-established institution, the University of Strathclyde has a proud line of alumni, including Team GB swimmer Robbie Renwick, inventor John Logie Baird, explorer David Livingstone and comedian Ed Byrne.

Strathclyde is located in the heart of Glasgow, so location-wise you are close to everything. Glasgow is a city with a population of half a million and more than 100k university students so it is well suited for uni life and has plenty to offer. I am not gonna lie, Strathclyde is not a top 100 university ranking-wise and that's actually one of the reasons why I choose it - it enables be to both get a really decent higher education in my field of choice and have enough free time to work on other projects I am passionate about. I am doing Computer Science and the curriculum is pretty great and up to date, for instance, we got introduced to neural networks in the second semester of the first year. Facility-wise my department is not the most modern one, but I don't think that affects my education in any meaningful way.

I am studying law at Strathclyde. I started a joint honours in English and Law and changed over to Law LLB since the course was so interesting. Through the first 3 years you have a selection of core subjects, set by the Law Society of Scotland that you must study in order to get a law degree. On top of these subjects, you can pick some extra subjects which you are interested in. There is a really varied choice and something for everyone. It gives you a good chance to try lots of different areas of law, so you find one that is your favourite! The lecturers are generally very helpful and approachable. There is a great selection of resources for you to use online during your studies and Strathclyde's online library is brilliant for finding articles. It's a more modern approach to studying law than some other universities and there are lots of extra things to get involved in, like the law clinic and the law review. Glasgow is a brilliant place to study and Strathclyde is right in the middle of Glasgow.

A lot of resources and assistance provided to students, library and its services are top notch and almost always available. Good feedback on work and level of teaching quite high. Great student atmosphere as well.

I studied in the business school of University of Strathclyde, and it surprised me with so many practice opportunities in various situation. Sometimes the task would ask students to learn something they have never touched before in a short time, which could be challenging but interesting as well. Students are from different backgrounds, so the communication and task-solving process could be fun and full of new skills.

Through a number of different courses and projects, I acquired practical experience in the product engineering and manufacturing industries which was really useful in my working life later on. The engineering faculties are not as strong as the business one. However, there is a good balance between educational fees and the content of the courses. Overall I would rate it as a good experience.

The first two years of my course had interesting modules. Although, I felt the examinations were more who could remember what the answers were rather than using any real problem solving skills. Moving in to 3rd year, we were given a group project which contributed significantly to your overall grade. In some cases this would allow team members to flourish and others to come out their shell but in the majority of cases one member would complete the full project while the other members obeyed. In terms of the University itself it had all of the relevant facilities required to complete the course. Although, in year 2 there was a fire which led to a large section of the building being closed off. The Union is by far one of the best in the UK - 8 floors with bars, pool rooms, food places and many other activities. This makes it very easy to socialize with other students at student prices. There is also great opportunity for students to have semesters/years abroad with the University having several partnerships throughout the world. Lastly, the location of Strathclyde is perfect for anyone in the greater Glasgow area. The various bus, train and subway routes make it easy to commute.

I am currently doing my internship as part of my MSc programme in Strathclyde Business School. Overall, I think the Uni provided me with highly valuable and analytical knowledge covered in the different modules throughout the year. I do like the group projects students are heavily involved into, making them think how this would apply into real case problems. Since I am here only for a year, I can say that Strathclyde encourages students into independent and dynamic learning. Also, there is very international student spirit and you get to know different cultures. Concerning the teaching quality I think it is very good, however some lecturers should concentrate not so much on dividing each module into 3 or 4 smaller ones, since the teaching material cannot be fully acquired.
