Description

The University of Southampton is a research-intensive university on the south coast of England. Founded in 1862 as the Hartley Institution, the University of Southampton was granted a royal charter by Queen Elizabeth II in 1952 in one of her first official acts as monarch. Today the university has five campuses in Southampton, one in Winchester and another in Malaysia, and a student population of almost 25,000 students – a third of whom are international. A founding member of the prestigious Russell Group of research-intensive universities, Southampton is a comprehensive university offering a choice of more than 300 degree programmes across a wide range of subject areas. The university is at the forefront of pioneering cancer immunotherapy research, and its engineering research is pushing the boundaries of performance sport with the help of large-scale facilities such as wind tunnels and towing tanks. Other centres of expertise include the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, the Institute for Life Sciences, the innovative Optoelectronics Research Centre, the Zepler Institute – a multidisciplinary research centre for electronics, optics, nano and quantum technologies – and the Web Science Institute, pioneers of the worldwide web, open data and Internet of Things. The University of Southampton actively helps student and staff start-up companies through its business incubators and Science Park. Over the years, the institution has also developed strong links with industry partners such as Microsoft, IBM and Philips. The university is also a significant contributor to the regional and national economy. Some of its most famous alumni include the BBC journalist and broadcaster Jon Sopel, Mercury Prize-nominated singer-songwriter Anna Calvi, BBC Radio One presenter Chris Stark and Formula One engineer Adrian Newey.

I spent 3.5 years undertaking my doctorate degree at Electronics & Computer Science. We had access to knowledgeable academic staffs, annual monetary benefits to purchase equipment & attend conferences/summer schools etc. and other intangibles (such as a conducive working environment & coffee). Easy access to everything (costa, pret, supermarket, bank!). Enjoyed every bit of my PhD adventure!

The University of Southampton is one of the leading universities in the United Kingdom. It is an amazing place to study. A lot of facilities in order supporting students. Professional academia in several subjects works hardly.

I am an MSc student at the school of electronics and computer science(ECS) of the University of Southampton. My course in electrical engineering is well structured and allocated throughout a year, so you will not feel heavily loaded and depressed. The university provides high-quality education and diverse student life. Everyone can find a suitable activity and join one of the multiple societies. Also, the location of the university is very convenient and creates a conducive atmosphere for study. In general, my overall impression of the university is very positive and I would definitely recommend the University of Southampton as a great place to study.

Psychology department in Southampton does great research. The university is diverse in terms of where people come from. There are good student facilities and the university is quite close to the main city centre. Lots of nature as well around the campus. There are also good events organised by the university. Accommodation is also relatively new! Really nice and helpful professors. Thanks, Southampton!

Lots of international students here, I think the tutors I met are great. Nice location in Winchester. Facilities are great. I think it’s that the gallery here is a bit petite for so many art students.

The university provides a conducive environment for PhD research students. We have positive and encouraging support from the research centres. Students also have the opportunities to involve in many seminars, attend classes, and participate in conferences. I enjoyed the experiences of being one of the organising committee members of the PGR student-led conferences, not once, but thrice, as well as being the Southampton Education School Student Representative. Being awarded the Poster Award First Prize is another achievement that every PhD students could have during the Doctorate Research FestivalI also love the university accommodation. Superb!

My time at the University of Southampton has been very enriching, especially because of the immensely supportive teaching staff. Not only does the curriculum help you garner a deeper interest in the field, but the teachers too, help in doing that by encouraging you to use your creativity to the fullest in all that you do. The University in itself also offers the best facilities in all departments. And as a city, Southampton is right on the coast; and is a really wonderful place to live in. There's a lot of good places to eat, and a lot of beautiful places nearby to explore, if you like travelling. All in all, studying at the University of Southampton can be a really great experience.

The university is very responsive to any queries. Stuff members such as PGR (Math) office and supervisors doing a great job. The programme runs nice and smoothly with a lot of flexibility. Perhaps, the capacity of sports facilities could be improved. The required bureaucracy to go to a conference could be simplified as well as all extra mandatory common knowledge courses could be reduced in volume to save time. Breakdowns of the payments for work would be nice to add so that students could keep track of numbers being paid to them. Apart from that everything is great.

I was an international student enrolled at the business school of the University of Southampton and my subject was HRM, master’s degree. My overall experience of the study was very positive, as the course offered deep and intense knowledge in my subject. All the information and support during my studies was given on a high level. I never felt lost or alone as there were engaging events and activities arranged for all the students. The whole process of study was organised in a way so that students felt welcomed and experienced a minimum of stress. I would definitely recommend the University of Southampton as a great place for study and student life experiences.
