Description

The University of Portsmouth can trace its history back to 1869 and the formation of the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and the Arts.

Portsmouth is a coastal town, and its dependence on shipping meant that the principal focus of this college was the training of engineers and dock workers.

As the city developed after the Second World War, maritime industry became less prominent in the area and the college diversified. It was renamed Portsmouth Polytechnic in the 1960s, and grew to be one of the biggest such institutions in the country.

University status was granted to Portsmouth in 1992, when the institution began to validate its own degrees (degrees had previously been validated by the Council for National Academic Awards).

In 2009 the university’s School of Law opened a mock courtroom, giving students the opportunity to take part in realistic recreations of course cases.

In the last few years, a number of new academic buildings have sprung up on campus. In 2014, a £14 million wing of the university’s Eldon Building opened, housing facilities for creative arts students - including a cinema-quality screen room with 200 seats, creative studios and seminar rooms.

This was followed in 2015 by the White Swan Building, attached to the New Theatre Royal providing performance space for students, and the Forensic Innovation Centre, set up with local police and giving students the opportunity to work with practitioners of forensic science.

Alumni of the University of Portsmouth include television presenter Ben Fogle and artist Grayson Perry.

I have loved my time at Portsmouth a very diverse university. Its purple door department has provided me with opportunities to volunteer at different organisations and people there have helped me improve my CV.

Overall, I would recommend the university for someone considering a law degree. I found that the course overall was well-structured over the three years, with the quality and frequency of seminars being a key reason for this. This may depend on individual preferences, but I always found seminars to be very helpful in understanding lectures, but I often found lectures to be tiring and difficult to concentrate on, dependent on the time of the lecture and the lecturer. However, that may be due to my preferred learning style. It is definitely worth noting the law department's swift adaption to the COVID-19 restrictions. When the university closed, the entire law department worked out how they would be delivering the remainder of the course within a few days. I found that the way in which the university delivered its online teaching was sufficient and comprehensive and did not feel disadvantaged in comparison to if I had been able to attend face-to-face lectures/seminars. I also note that the expertise/quality of lecturers, especially in my final year, was of a very high standard. Having a lecturer who has vast demonstrable knowledge of their area of law is encouraging, motivating and makes learning much easier! However, I would note that I felt a lack of support in trying to find a placement. I intended to take a year out of studying to gain relevant work experience, but I struggled to; balance a comprehensive job search with studying; get input from the university career service beyond improving my CV/Cover letter; and felt a general lack of support in this area from the university. Though I ended up gaining valuable experience, it was not the placement year I had in mind.

I reside in the CCI faculty at the university of Portsmouth and the teaching and support that i receive is amazing. The lecturers and tutors make you feel welcome and understand your difficulties, as well as any problems you are having. They take a great deal of care within their work, and passing down knowledge to the next generation. Their teaching methods are clear and universal. The university allows you to access a huge amount of additional resources, such as a large library, computer suits, 3D printing and lots more. Couldn't recommend it enough!

Portsmouth University is a unique place. The cultural diversity allowed me to make so many friends from completely different backgrounds and cultures. The Geography course i studied was engaging and allowed me to experience other places in the world i had never been to before or even thought of going too. One place the course took our year group to was Berlin. The trip was something that shaped my time at university and allowed me to grow as an individual in many ways. It enabled me to come out of my shell and to make friends with the people and my course and enabled me to get to know the lecturers. This proved very useful later when writing a dissertation and when the course became more intense. Therefore the course has not only allowed me to experience cities abroad but to also establish contacts within the university, make life long friends, establish vital life skills as well as gain a degree at the same time!

Overall my three years in Portsmouth was challenging but I really enjoyed it. My favourite modules were economics and corporate governance, it was taught really well and I was always interested in subjects like that so those were my strongest. The ones I struggled with the most was a module called OMA, personally I was never able to understand the concept and it was an overwhelming module, this was the same with auditing, there was a lot of information giving in such little time it made it harder to revise it for exams, it was hard to gain help with these subject as lecturers didn’t want to give too much away. The business faculty was the highlight of Portsmouth, they were always helpful, sending emails about events and extra help if needed which was nice. Being from London made Portsmouth a very different location with very limited things to do outside university however the beach is beautiful
