Description

The University of Patras, founded in 1964, is the third largest university in Greece and includes 24 multidisciplinary departments divided between five schools.

While it was originally set in the centre of the city of Patras in western Greece, today the main campus is located on a 600-acre wooded area in the Patras suburb of Rion after land was appropriated for the university shortly after it was founded.

The campus now hosts a conference centre, a number of museums and the Regional University Teaching Hospital as well as sports facilities, cafeterias, student halls of residence and lots of other services that make the campus very self-sufficient. There is also a satellite campus in the city of Agrinio, around 80km north of Patras and the University of Western Greece was incorporated in the University of Patras in June 2013.

The university’s emblem, Andrew the Apostle, was chosen after the University was officially opened on November 30, 1966, the same day that the city of Patras celebrates its Patron Saint, Andrew.

The University of Patras has received international recognition for its research, and many of the university departments have been nominated as Centres of Excellence, based on international assessment. The university contributes to a number of major European research projects and the University of Patras laboratories are at the heart of several national and international scientific programs.

Among the University of Patras alumni are the poet Christos Laskaris, award-winning actress Marilita Lambropoulou and distinguished computer scientist Nikolaos Bourbakis.

The University of Patras has 37 departments in the fields of science, health, education, economics and the humanities. It consists of great teaching and research staff, about 800 people, with knowledge and experience, thus greatly raising the level of studies. Every student, undergraduate or graduate, has the right to access free education and other facilities and services such as meals, accommodation in dormitories, stadiums and sports facilities, a lending library, museums, workshops, amphitheaters, a radio station and a conference center. At the same time, the classes take place in suitably designed rooms, amphitheaters, special laboratories or outdoors while the internship can be done at the University Hospital of Patras, in schools, kindergartens, etc., depending of course on the course of study. The campus is located close to the center of Patras and is served by bus and suburban bus lines. It is worth mentioning the cultural groups of students of the University of Patras (PDOPP), in which any student who wishes can participate in dance or theatrical groups as well as film and rhetoric departments. In addition, the University of Patras cooperates with universities of other countries (eg USA, Italy, Spain, Romania, Cyprus, etc.). Students can take part in this international action, through Erasmus exchange programs, by taking part in their studies or internship abroad. Finally, we emphasize that despite the financial difficulties of the Greek state in recent years and therefore its reduced contribution to higher education, the University of Patras manages to make good use of available resources, placing it high in the global ranking of higher education institutions.

It's a university with lot's of faculties and big diversity of students. Most of the proffesors adapted to the online classes and the university even have a sponsor from a popular online platfrom and it gives free accounts to all students and professors. Apart from the facilities of each faculty it has the dorms, that are kind of nice but nothing special, cafeterias that are very well equiped and clean and some sport facilities

The ECE department is good enough to learn and it gives you a lot of opportunities. There are a lot of activities to do with organizations, clubs and teams too. The problem is that most professors do not care if the students learn or not. Professors are not getting evaluated by anyone so if someone doesn’t do a good job, they continue working on the same position. A lot of them, they do not cooperate and if you have questions they do not want to help you. Also, some of them speak rudely and make you uncomfortable. They are the reason many lose interest in this department! On the other hand, we have some really inspiring professors, though a few, they help you a lot and keep you motivated! They just love what they do! Overall I have mixed feelings about this department and I have caught myself thinking to drop this university and go to another one with better professors and climate, but this one is free and also it has opened me a lot of opportunities as a student through the students' teams and organizations! So that is why I will continue to study here!

The University of Patras (UoP) is one of the biggest campuses in Greece. It enumerates dozens of faculties with students from all over Greece and Cyprus. I can say that the University's infrastructure is obsolete and there are no funds for renovation. The government and the rectory authority does not invest in creating a modern, friendly environment for the students. Although, the student's community is very active in the UoP, providing a variety of events and projects to fulfill every interest and need. We, as students, support this kind of initiative and I would recommend to everyone to get into that community! Hope that helped! Have a nice day!

University of Patras is established in a beautiful green location at Rio, Patras, and you can easily reach it by bus or by train. Its facilities are adequate and most of the professors are remarkable, with many distinctions in their CV. Also, student life at Patras is greaaat due to the beautiful bars, restaurants and other places for having fun- for all tastes, both noisy and quiet places- in the center of Patras, but at Rio as well.

The study program helps you develop soft skills and hard skills. There is a vibrant group of student volunteering associations that helps you build your social skills. The location is very good and the facilities are satisfying.

My experience for the past three years is good overall. The pandemic has affected negatively my studies, as I have found it much more difficult to stay involved when I'm not present in the university, and I don't feel empowered to do so as well. The university and professors on the other hand haven't adjusted well to the online environment, as after 3 exams periods there hasn't been found an effective way of examing the students. Something very positive about the university is the other ways you can get involved, apart from your studies. There is a large number of student associations present in the campus, and that helps a lot of students, including me, staying involved, in both the live and the online period. Also, there are many seminars to attend that can improve both the hard and the soft skills of the students. Finally, something I enjoy a lot is the student life Patras has to offer, although it is my hometown. Overall, I enjoy my studies at the University of Patras, and I'm looking forward to returning to the campus.
