Description

The University of Nottingham is a public research university in the UK city of Nottingham.

The city’s first civil college opened in 1881 and its foundation stone was laid by the then Prime Minister, WE Gladstone.

By 1928 it had outgrown its original building and moved to what is today the university’s main campus. It wasn’t until 1948 that the college was awarded the Royal Charter, allowing it to officially become the University of Nottingham and award degrees in its own name.

Since its inception, the university has emphasised innovation. In 1970 it founded the UK’s first 20th century Medical School, and in 1995 the School of Nursing – a result of the university merging with the Mid-Trent College of Nursing and Midwifery.

In 2000 the university opened a campus in Malaysia. Five years later it opened another, a new purpose-built park campus near Kuala Lumpur. In 2006, Nottingham became the first foreign university to be invited to establish an independent campus in Ningbo, China, a historic city close to Shanghai.

Worldwide, the university has a student cohort of over 40,000 who between them represent more than 150 countries. Through its various study abroad programmes, most students have the opportunity to study overseas as part of their degree, in countries that include Sweden, Mexico, Japan, New Zealand and the US.

Over the years, the University of Nottingham has taught a number of outstanding students who have gone on to become Nobel prize winners, leading scientists, politicians, novelists and Olympic gold medallists. They include the novelist DH Lawrence, the sixth Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato Seri Najib Razak, and former head of the secret intelligence service Sir John Sawers.

Today, the university is home to five faculties: Arts, Medicine and Health Sciences, Science, Engineering and Social Sciences.

Nottingham is known for having a vibrant social scene and is home to a students’ union that supports an eclectic range of organisations, societies, student groups, campaigns and community projects.

Its motto translates into English as ‘A city is built on wisdom.’

I’m so thrilled that I decided to study at UoN for my undergraduate degree. The university alone has so much to offer and there is always something going on. University Park Campus is one of the most beautiful campuses in the country in my opinion and the SU is super supportive of students. Student life is always a motive during the week and the city centre seeks to accommodate students. Would definitely recommend for future prospective students.

Not only were lecturers eager and available to help but the facilities offered by the university and the atmosphere of the campus is the most welcoming setting I could have expected.

My course is challenging and allows you to really learn in various different ways, such as workshops, lectures, shadowing etc. Nottingham student life is amazing as the campus is not far from the town centre where there are all types of bars and clubs. Campus accommodation is catered which isn’t the best food but the experience alone is worth it

UoN really does feel like such a community! It always feels like you are being pushed to do your absolute best , whether that’s academically (which can be tough) or through other aspects of becoming part of our local community and an impactful world citizen. The focus on environmental and societal values is great and definitely acts as inspiration.

The University itself embodies diversity and an array of useful services for undergraduate and postgraduates. It also has exceptional support for students dealing with mental health, their response is by the far the most helpful in comparison to competing universities. Alongside this staff are also very generous with the amount of support they supply for students.

Overall, the university experience has been great. Within my course, I felt that the transition from A-Level to University was very comfortable and I didn't feel like I was behind at all. The pre-written notes provided by all my lecturers was a blessing and meant that I didn't have to worry about missing any important information as the lecturer is speaking (not all lecturers record their lectures so having these notes saves quite a lot of time). My first-year experience in a catered hall was lovely. The food mainly had its good days and the 'family vibe' was really present throughout the formals, daily dinner times and other events organised within our halls. The hall was also a good distance away from my engineering buildings, the Student Union shops and the gym. At first, the high hills were a bit difficult to climb up and down but after a while, you get used to them and it feels like a nice short workout before lectures! There are more flat paths around the university too. The societies are easy to join and all have been welcoming to freshers and even those who join halfway through the year (you don't always have to sign up for everything right at the beginning). Overall, my experience has been wonderful and I am looking forward to moving into a new house with friends from my hall next year!

The vet school at SB has very good resources for teaching including labs, dissections and practices. Also having 24/7 access to small group teaching rooms is very useful when studying as it is quiet and has all books needed.

Excellent opportunities of research and well-educated professors, people with motivation and drive can go the distance along with a wide variety of clubs and societies than you can join to also learn secondary skills

Have really enjoyed my time in Nottingham. The campus is a great place to study, and having the city on your doorstep means you get the best of both worlds. The course is really well organised and the staff are great.
