Description

The Technical University of Cluj-Napoca is the largest technical university in Transylvania, Romania. It has run as its current form since 2012 but can trace its roots back to the formative days of the modern state of Romania.

Founded as an Industrial College in 1920, it went through four changes of name before spending most of the Communist era as Cluj Polytechnic Institute.

In 1992, when it took its current name, it had faculties of automation and computer science, electronics, telecommunications and computer science, electrical engineering, civil engineering, machine building and materials science and engineering. In 1998 it added architecture and urban planning and in 2007 a faculty of installations.

These nine faculties make up the modern university together with those of engineering, letters and science which cam from the North University of Baia Mare in 2012. The university also has extension centres in Alba Iulia, Bistrita, Satu Mare and Zalau.

Since 2007 it has been a member of the Francophone Universities Association and in 2011 was recognised as one of Romania’s 12 Advanced Research and Education Universities. It has set itself the goal of becoming "a significant player both at national as well as an international level".

Research centres include the CERTETA Sheet Metal Technology centre established in 2000. The university has formed significant partnerships with international companies in Cluj-Napoca. In 2017 Porsche Romania supported the creation of a master's course in advanced technology and automotive engineering, while Bosch Global have sponsored an autonomous driving course and Google Romania has set up a digital workshop for programmers.

First of all, I have to mention that my review should be only considered when it comes to the Department of Geodesy, since this is the one I've been part of for 4 years. There is nothing hide about the fact that everything we have learned was fully theoretical and we were not given the chance for actually practising while using equipments we should have been familiarized with. Moreover, our professors were not engaged in any kind of extra-curricular activities, no internships were possible to apply for, no conferences, no research center for meaningful projects to be part of. Basically, I felt totally stuck in a field that should be fully practical and in the end in turned out to be just to opposite.

I liked the fact that there were quite a lot of practical classes and since we had quite good equipment we've learned a lot. Another thing that I liked was the many activities in which we have companies coming to our University and we had the chance to know them and their work. The opportunities for voluntary work in the University were absolutely amazing! There were a lot to choose from and they were all really cool, changing the university life for the good. Last but not least, I always felt that if i wanted to learn more than in the class, the professors would help me.

The buildings of the University are quite great and up to date in many aspects. The laboratories are well equiped and the lecture rooms are comfortable enough for 2 or 3 hour lectures. In the English specializations, the professors are very well suited for their jobs as most of them have been working recently in the domain that they are teaching. However, there are many cases of professors (especially in the Romanian specializations) that do not do a very well job of teaching their students as they are somehow stuck in the past, using old, irrelevant information and outdated teaching techniques and this is the only reason that I didn't give a rating of 5 stars.

I've decided to come to this University because my siblings finished here and they said that the programs are perfect for becoming a future engineer. The professors have different attitudes depending on the faculty you are at. Some are cool with students and really give their time and out some interest in the teaching process and some are just old fashioned. I am studying mechatronics and I can definitely say that 80% of the professors are very cool. i definitely recommend applying to this faculty because it has amazing opportunities since it has lot's of programmes with big companies that are in the city, such as Bosch, Porsche, Arrk and so on, so you get in contact with HRs and engineers pretty early I would say. Moreover, professors are very open to recommending you to companies and the University and student organisations are always organising some JobFairs.
