1966Description
The University of Salento, with its strong academic reputation and its beautiful Apulia setting, was established in 1955.
Its youth might be seen as something of a strong point, as the university characterises itself as young and dynamic in its approach to teaching.
The university’s faculties are Economics, Engineering, Law, Education, Political and Social Sciences, Humanities, Language and Cultural Heritage, and Mathematics.
A broad range of courses are on offer, most in Italian, with a selection in English.
Internationalisation is a key aim of the university. The University of Salento prides itself on providing a nurturing environment for international students, and Its student welcome centre is managed by ex-students. The centre offers a place to work or just socialise.
The university has more than 130 Erasmus partners and 50 cooperation agreements with other universities, exchanging staff and students and collaborating in research.
Two museums are located on the university campus. The Museo Papirologico contains research on Egyptology, while the Museo Storico Arceologico houses a collection of antiquities that is one of the area’s top tourist attractions.
Lecce, the city in which the university is based, is a fascinating Baroque city rich with Greek influence. Its stunning architecture gives it its nickname: “the Florence of the South”. There are beaches within 30 minutes’ drive of the university campus.
There are three major festivals in Lecce each year, respectively celebrating film, music, and the local patron saint, Oronzo.
