Description

The University of Szeged is a large research university located in Hungary’s Southern Great Plain.

It offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programmes across 12 faculties, spanning the arts, humanities, sciences and medicine.

Around one in 10 students are drawn from overseas, with around 100 countries represented in the student body, and a number of academic programmes are offered in languages other than Hungarian, including English and German.

The institution also has a strong reputation for industry collaboration and innovation, and hosts one of Europe’s most advanced laser research centres.

The University of Szeged traces its history back to 1872, with the foundation of the University of Kolozsvár, in what is now the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca.

Following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the institution moved to Szeged in 1921 as Franz Joseph University and shortly afterwards its most notable academic, Albert Szent-Györgyi, started work. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 1937, for identifying vitamin C and extracting it from paprika.

Franz Joseph University moved back to Cluj-Napoca in 1940 so the University of Szeged was formed in the old premises, mainly employing former staff Franz Joseph staff.

In 1962, the Szeged institution took on the name Attila József University, honouring a Hungarian poet who had been a student during the 1920s.

The name University of Szeged was readopted in 2000, when the university merged with a series of other higher education institutions in the city, including Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical University and Gyula Juhász Teacher Training College.

Szeged is Hungary’s third-largest city, with a population of around 170,000.

People tend to be very negative when it comes to talk about Hungary, or to a Hungarian (I have experiences regarding this, because I spent half a year in Norway), but my university in Szeged is splendid! It is a wonderful place to spend your Erasmus scholarship, or to apply for a Stipendicum Hungaricum scholarship, or just to study there during your Bachelor years. I can assure you won't regret it.

I am an Erasmus student and I was looking forward to joining the University of Szeged. I was given proper guidelines well in advance and all the necessary documentation was done prior. The University arranged mentors to pick me up from the bus stop which was a cordial gesture from their side despite their busy class schedules. Post arrival, the staff helped me through all the various procedures in the city and educational curriculum. The teaching staff was so brilliant because they possessed a lot of knowledge that paved a way for another level of educational enlightenment. The syllabus encouraged class participation, presentations, discussions and group activity combined with weekly tests that were a boon to the budding mind. Overall, the educational journey of mine in this University was top notch and I enjoyed myself in the various parties and events organized by the student board. I would surely recommend other students to not miss out on this chance of studying here.

The University of Szeged is one of the largest and oldest universities in Hungary. I studied there quite a long time ago so probably many things have changed since then. The course was what I expected. The teaching methods were rather traditional at that time. But the professors were all very respectable in their own fields. The town is lovely it has a lot of students.

From study perspective it's very comprehensive regardless you are pursuing natural, social (or any other) sciences. I was lucky enough to participate in great courses like astronomy or linguistics. Easy to find great tutors and the staff of the university is very supportive. Check the library which is one of the biggest in Hungary. Community is also great, the city is built around the university. You can easily find good programs in sport and culture (including nightlife). Life is quite affordable (depends on your wallet, certainly), cheap flats are available in big number. (worth to fix this before the semester starts) Love the river and the buildings.
