Description

Queen Mary University of London is a leading research-intensive university with a difference. Its history dates back to 1785 and beyond, with four founding institutions established to provide “hope and opportunity” to underprivileged members of society who faced significant barriers to education. Today, Queen Mary is a global university with an ongoing commitment to improving lives locally, nationally and internationally through teaching, research, and impactful outreach work. With staff and students from over 160 nationalities across its community, Queen Mary is proud to be one of the most diverse higher education institutions in the world, and one whose undergraduate student profile is distinctive for a Russell Group University. Ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of research outputs (REF 2014), Queen Mary has world-leading research strengths across its three faculties, including in Dentistry, Medicine, History, Linguistics, AI, Robotics, Films Studies and Drama. Curiosity-driven research informs teaching. It has seen Queen Mary at the forefront of crucial advancements in genomic medicine, cancer and heart disease treatment, and leading the conversation on political theory and gender and health inequalities. Queen Mary offers postgraduate law courses in Paris and Piraeus, Greece, a Bachelor of Medicine (MBBS) at its Malta campus, and a thriving transnational education programme of over 4,000 students based in China. As well as a global presence, the University is embedded in the heart of London’s dynamic East End, next to the tech and financial hub of the UK, with five well-connected campuses (Mile End, Whitechapel, Lincoln’s Inn Field, West Smithfield and Charterhouse Square) and the rest of the capital – and the world – on its doorstep.

On-Campus life was excellent with a lot of support from tutors and senior year students. The student's accommodations are just at walking distance from the teaching sites and make it convenient for students and safe time and money.

I didn’t stay in the accommodation so can’t comment on that. Facilities were good, I had all that I feel I needed to complete my work. There was generally always library space/ computer access in many different buildings to use. I felt that some of the lecturers were not hard-working enough or considering the fact that many students come from backgrounds where English isn’t a first language. Eg. We had a module called banking law and the lecturer NOT even once gave us a model answer for how to write an essay style answer for our exams even though we begged for him to do this as a guide/ structure to help us to know what he is looking for in an essay style answer. That is just an example of what I mean by not hard-working/ considerate. One of my modules in the first semester for my masters was very tough as I came from an unrelated undergraduate degree background. I learnt from the external teacher of that course that there is much pre-requisite knowledge that would have enabled me to do well and understand terminology and basics before starting the module but we had never been told this by the university we were thrown in at the deep end without warning (those with a non-finance background). I think the careers department are great. So many useful resources such as access to accounts that help you practice employer style psychometric tests, meetings with advisors, continuous emails with career opportunities, continuous career fairs and events throughout the terms I can’t fault them with that. This is my experience in the School of economics and finance and specifically investment banking masters course. It could be different within another department. The campus has about 5 different sights to eat (one is a full-on student diner/ restaurant, one is 2 are cafes, and 1 is within the library. This is great as I’ve been to a university where there were only like 2. The location Of the campus is close to 2 train stations 3-5 mins for one and 8-10mins for the other station which is helpful when running late for class or going home late at night! What would make it more ideal is if there was a close shopping centre or a collection of stores close by e.g. Superdrug, Boots or a Greggs, Mc Donald’s just more shops around would make it better.

QMUL is a university in the Eastern part of London with great facilities at that time when I was graduating and many civil projects in place to increase existing facilities. All the studies took place on one campus and dormitories were on campus or just across the road outside the campus. During my studies, I made a lot of friends that left a lot of nice moments together to remember.

It is the only university in London which has a booming campus life. The teaching staff is very understanding and makes it a point to hear out the students and take their opinion while making decisions.

I enjoy my university due to the collaboration between the students and lecturers. They listen and provide detailed learning and extra resources so you’re not only scraping the surface but rather the entire spectrum of an argument. The challenge of stating an argument and providing a clear narrative to the set coursework was challenging due to the high standard nature of the work required. The accessibility of resources and development of ideas of not only my course of film but instead the politics and information supplied alongside the details of a film. I was not only given one view to understand but many and not only from a film perspective but from diverse areas of study.

I liked that it had a lot of societies to join, which allowed me to meet new people and the lecturers there are really friendly and super helpful. QMUL is a Russell Group university which means more opportunities and people on campus are very friendly and welcoming. I think it’s a lovely place to go uni there and highly recommend it!
