Description
The major in American Studies with a concentration in American Indian and Indigenous Studies consists of nine courses from the following categories (website). At least one of the courses must be at the 300level or above and courses listed more than once can be counted for only one category. The American Indian and indigenous studies concentration provides a meaningful grounding in the histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences of peoples indigenous to North America, as well as their encounters with settler states. The curriculum increasingly provides opportunities for students to gain a hemispheric perspective that includes the histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. In addition, as their elective, students may choose a course focusing on Indigenous peoples outside of the presentday borders of the United States. Until a formal change to the major and minor concentration is approved and takes effect, students must petition the Director of Undergraduate Studies and American Indian and Indigenous Studies Concentration Coordinator to have them count.
