Description

The University of Bamberg is a public university located in the city of Bamberg, Upper Franconia, Germany.

It was originally founded in 1647 and then re-established in 1972. The university has an academic focus on the humanities, social and economic sciences, as well as human sciences and application-oriented computer sciences.

The university is mainly based in Bamberg’s Old Town in a number of historical buildings, which include the former Jesuit college, now home to the theology department. The former hochzeitshaus, or wedding house, now houses the history departments and the former fire station, which is home to Oriental studies. The old slaughterhouse has been transformed into the Earth science faculty. A former cotton mill, located on an island in the Regnitz river, will be turned into student accommodation.

Teaching is arranged under four faculties: the faculty of humanities; the faculty of social sciences, economics and business administration; the faculty of human sciences and education; and the faculty of information systems and applied computer science.

The University of Bamberg has cooperation agreements with about 300 higher education institutions in more than 60 countries. Its European network includes both the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford. It also has partnerships with the University of Sydney in Australia, Xi'an Jiaotong University in China, the Korea University, and the Japanese Sophia University.

The university’s mission statement says that it should be “regionally rooted, academically distinguished, and internationally connected”. It has a goal to offer all its members equal opportunities and has received family-friendly certification.

I loved my time at the University of Bamberg because of several factors. The Bachelor I chose to study there was unique in the way it was offered in Bamberg, there are many optional courses and every student can put together his or her individual schedule with times and topics that he or she liked best. Apart from that, the University of Bamberg is very international, there are hundreds of international students incoming as well as hundreds of students from Bamberg outgoing. Regarding the professors and tutors, of course, there were some really good ones and other ones that presented their slides with less enthusiasm. You will figure out how you study best during your 3 years at University anyway. Sometimes it's honestly better to stay at home and study for yourself… Next, to that, our buildings are not on one campus, but we do have several smaller campuses where there is always a nice atmosphere and where you always meet someone you know. There is also a big offer in student organisations. I was part of the student association AEGEE-Bamberg/European Students' Forum, which enriched my student life in a way that I found amazing friends, I travelled a lot of thanks to AEGEE, I took part in different soft skill training and developed myself by working in AEGEE both on a local level, organizing projects and events and being part of the managing board and on the European level, participating in events and taking leading roles in our trans-national groups. I would totally recommend the University of Bamberg to anyone who wants to study in a cozy, familiar atmosphere, who likes to engage himself in extracurricular activities and who likes UNESCO world heritage city centres. You will love Bamberg!

The University of Bamberg is spread all over the City but you can still go everywhere within not more than 20 minutes by bike. Even though there are quite many students in Bamberg, it feels like the university is small and familiar because you will always see someone you know. Additionally, there is a high number of student organizations with different interests and focus areas. As a result, there are always events and the cultural life in Bamberg is quite diverse. The university itself also is a university of short ways. Depending on the degree of studies, teachers know their students and are supporting them with their studies. The administration is also helpful and answers within a short time. As a result, especially for teaching degrees i would recomment the university of Bamberg.

I had a very good time at Otto-Friedrich University in Bamberg. First of all the university is located in a beautiful small town which has to offer many cultural activities. The faculties are located at different locations. The human and cultural studies faculty, where I studied, is in the city center. The buildings are beautiful, but most of them a bit old-fashioned and the technology is not very up-to-date. But there are also very modern buildings at other faculties. The atmosphere at my faculty and between the professors was always very pleasant and friendly. The number of students in courses was low, so you get to know everyone easily. Every semester interesting courses with different emphases were offered. The only things that can be improved are the websites and the registration for courses, which is complicated and always takes a while. There are many nice libraries in good locations, where you can study, although during exam period it is sometimes difficult to get a place. I can recommend this university because I really enjoyed my student life.
