Description

New York University (NYU) is one of the biggest private higher education institutes in the United States, and is highly regarded among American institutions.

Its history dates back to 1831, when the head of the US department of Treasury Albert Gallatin pushed forward the idea of establishing an easily accessible, innovative university in the most populous city in the US.

After almost two centuries of development, the institution became an academic centre that aims to set trends in global research and nurture talent from all the around the globe. It grants a significant amount to students in financial aid annually, in addition to generous funding for research.

The institution, which itself has a significant endowment, is perhaps most famously associated with its undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in social science, dentistry, nursing and fine arts.

With campuses on two continents from New York to Abu Dhabi and Shanghai, the university’s affiliates officially operate in 25 countries around the world. Locally, the university’s New York campus is formed of over 20 colleges and schools placed at 5 different locations in and around New York, such as Lower Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn.

The main campus, located in the heart of Lower Manhattan in the vicinity of Sixth Avenue and Washington Square Park, covers 1 km² of land. It offers guaranteed housing options to freshmen, who may find themselves among the 11 thousand visitors who explore the Bobst library, one of the 11 libraries operated by NYU.

New York University’s alumni have received a number of Nobel and Crafoord Prizes, as well as several Pulitzer Prizes and Abel Prizes in the past.

After having the Violet for its official mascot for a century, the university introduced the Bobcat, an extinct species of big cat related to the puma. It symbolises the combination between the university’s academic achievement and success in sport activities.

I am an engineering student and knowing that people would assume that I would be someone without social life and no time for any university clubs and such. That is completely false. This is NYC. A city that lives and breathes no matter what the time is, and NYU emulates the same behaviour. I can't stress enough how much fun it is to go here, and the same time being rewarding. There are people who find themselves isolated or lonely in the first semester or even year. That happens. And it's ok because you will find the people you will vibe with. Yes, there is no campus to just roam around, but NYU offers you the city. You will find your crowd, believe that. Academically wise NYU is not the most challenging, and since I am doing engineering, I am more than okay with that. This allows me to have time for myself and my own interests. Overall, I loved my experience so far.

The thing I appreciated the most about NYU was their continual efforts at improving. I always felt like the university put its student first. They provided exceptional career services and would engage all students. The only downside I think one will experience is the lack of a traditional campus. I know they advertise it as NYC is your campus but there are certain things about campus life that just can't be met in the city. NYC other downside is that the living expenses are also daunting.

NYU gives you the opportunity to enjoy the whole of New York as a campus. You’re literally so close to all the amazing the New York has to offer. NYU also gives you the opportunity of networking and connecting with plenty of students through clubs, events etc. My favourite thing is the study abroad programs offered. NYU allows you to study abroad in 10 different cities and this is a great opportunity to travel learn more about a new place. I studied abroad in the Florence campus and I feel like it was the most enriching part of my college experience

NYU is a school like no other in a city like no other. Diversity is off the charts and the opportunities for internships and jobs are abundant. Faculty is engaging and helpful and so are administrative staff. Only downside is the cost of attendance which is, at times, restrictively high. Overall, it is an amazing school and if given the option to pick again I would pick NYU in a heartbeat.

NYU is great for self motivated students and the location is unbeatable. All the professors I’ve had range from okay to excellent, so it’s an overall good learning experience. I have the freedom to pursue whatever academic interests I have, as well as go abroad. The biggest downside are the students. I feel like many of my peers are boring, dumb, unmotivated rich kids.
